My 88 starts up runs for a few seconds then stalls out. Will start back up with no problem then the Service Engine light comes on. It will also stall out while waiting on a light to change or sitting at a stop sign. Once again she starts right back up.
Idle air control valve maybe? Not sure on the vettes, but fixed my friends Ford Escape. Poke around for sensor readings on the forum. I have seen people dump some mad info on this page on ohming out all kinds of sensors. I'm sure there is some sort of easy test you can do.
Does the ECM have any codes present? The IAC is a good place to look if the engine RPM is "hunting" @ idle and then stalls....On an "88 I think there is a small hole (hole allows air to pass around the blades the IAC meters and adjust this air flow with a solinoid) between the blades in the throttle body....the thing may be plugged up with crap. Before you go all meter crazy or taking stuff apart just clean the thing. Get some throttle body spray cleaner - clean the carbon off the blades and spray some in the IAC intake hole as well.

Good luck!
Yeah that's what others said to start at too. I couldn't find any of those specific posts I mentioned above. Let's just hope it's something a simple cleaning will fix. Just make sure you start with the easy stuff first. Best of luck to ya!
