Today I skipped class and installed the B&M I got from a guy on here called harleymarkt. I got it yesterday, and since my exhaust is already off, and even though I have to still install my clutch I decided to put it in anyway.
Well it took me 2 hours, because I had to move the piece the shifter was in 180 degrees for it to fit, I used channel locks and a rag to hold the pin while I had to remove the 2 nuts, ended up messing up the threads so I had to take it out, use a new nut and bolt that was in my basement to clean the threads (since i dont have a tap & die set..)
Anyway It was pretty straight foward, and I love the shifter so far, it is a little notchy but it is near impossible to miss a gear, it just goes right into gear.
As far as how far the difference is, I would say the stock shifter had to be moved a good 5 inches between gears, this one is about 1 1/2 - 1 3/4.
I have had B&M shifters when I had my old integra, but nothing compares to this one.
EDIT: Just a side note: They tell you to use needle nose pliers to remove the T inside the stock ****, this is near impossible. I used a 2' long slotted screwdriver and pryed it out from the side, using the side of the **** for leverage.
I actually drove two Vettes from my old club prior to deciding between the Hurst and The B&M. Both are fantastic, but there is nothing like the ratchet-like feel that the B&M offers. Its totally up to personal preference; is it wrong that I turn down the radio every once and a while to here it click into gear between shifts? It truly makes you feel like your driving a machine.
Got the Hurst..love it. Don't have the reverse lockout feature but no problem. Mr ZF (Bill Boudreau) says with a 15# break through you may shift your tranny in reverse then it becomes a $2000 misunderstanding!
It would take a real village idiot to do that.
When I fist got done in the garage I thought it was hard and notchy, but after driving it I really like how there is that ratchet-like feel as GS348 explains it.
It just doesnt feel sloppy anymore, feels like a new car again
Congrats on the upgrade in shifter. I put a Hurst in mine and up to today, it has been the best upgrade I've done to my Vette. BTW, I used a strong set of vice grips to pull the key out.
