I think my transmission went south. There is LOUDclicking noises right under the center console under acceleration. Also the shift lever vibrates. When I shift from reverse to drive there is a loud CLUNK and the same when I shift back into reverse.
My Question is------ Is the transmission in a 89 Camaro Z28 the same as a transmission in a 87 Vette? I have access to the 89 Z28. If It is I would like to transplant it into the Vette
I know, I know Use the search function. But I'm too pissed off right now, I'm gong to miss the National Corvette Challenge in VA., and I've got to get back to work.
So if anybody knows I would appreciate the help.
My Vette is an 87 It is stock and has a 3:07 rear.

Doug, the Z28 700R4 has a different tailshaft and the output shaft is longer. Other than this the Tranny will fit into a Vette, the 700R4 case is the same.
The tail can be swapped out, the the output shaft issue I am not sure how to deal with.
Does the Tranny still shift gears ?
You might be better off to have the Vette Tranny rebuilt.
You likely broke the rear planet, or have a converter failure.
That's what someone told me today at our club meeting.
Looks like I've got a new project whether I like it or not.

You are kidding, right? The way the car sounds now I won't drive it 10 feet! It literally sounds like major pieces are going to break off and fall out of the car.

If you pull it and take it to a shop, a 700R4 rebuild should cost about 1K.
700's are quite common. If there is substantial hard part damage, do not let them charge you hundreds of dollars in hard part replacements. They are easy to find in good, used , solid condition.

So back to my original question. The transmission in my 89 Z28 would work as a replacement? It seems that I only need to change the tail shaft. I drove the Z28 yesterday and it shifts firm and only has 97,000 miles on it. Since it shifts good and has 40,000 less miles on it than my 87 trans. would that be considered "solid condition"?

It will work as a replacement, but the following is required:
Cut output shaft 11/16"
Move speedo gear to "b" hole on output shaft
Install vette tailhousing and speedo gears/sensor
This will get you down the road.
I suggest you swap the following to retain the vette trans "character"
Governor
servo
4th gear wot upshift valve
accumulator springs
By doing this, you will have a trans that will be very similar to what you have.
My guess is you have a bad u-joint and the transmission is fine. The clunk when you shift it into gear is a classic indication of a bad u-joint.
The 1989 transmission (if you need it) will work but you will need to switch the tailshaft andyou may have to shorten the splines on the transmission to get your driveshaft to slide into place. I am running a 1988 Z-28 transmission in my vete but I cannot remember if I hd to shorten the splines.
