'89 L98...for the past 3-4 months, i've gone through 3 fuel pumps. the 3rd one is still in the car. i haven't had a chance to remove it yet. when i install a new one, she runs like a charm! However, the joy is short lived! i feel i have a deeper problem than just the fuel pump. has anyone had this trouble? or, does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this? the car has a new gas filter and a new fuel pump relay, so i don't feel this could be causing my trouble. any help is greatly appreciated!
Did you replace the sock when you replaced the pump? Alot of guys have found a problem with the eletrical connection at the pump. Have you checked these pumps after you removed them?
yes. i put a new sock on each time i replaced the pump. the connection in the tank looked fine. the wires in the tank looked good. what about the pulsator that the tip of the pump fits up into? i was getting a reading through an ohm meter on all the wires in the tank. no i haven't tried the pump after removing it from the tank. just hook 12 volts to it?
Take one of the old pumps and run an alligator clipped wire from the pump + terminal to the + terminal on the battery. Run a similar clipped wire from the negative pump terminal to any metal area in the engine compartment. MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS NO GAS LEFT IN THE PUMP & no heavy fumes! If the pump is good, it will run in your hand. If not, its a dead soldier.
You might want to check your tank to make sure that you don't have some sand or grit in the tank. If you do and the pump is picking this up, it will fry the pump pretty quick.
