Default crap

A friend recently replaced his distributor cap & rotor with an Accel unit and afterward his car ran like crap too.....cap replacement obviously involved moving the coil from old cap to new.....it took a while but he eventually discovered that one of the coil mounting screws had penetrated the top of the cap and offered a path of least resistance for the spark directly to the screw and to the coil frame whenever the rotor was under the crack in the cap......look closely at everything !!!!

Whats the best way to remove the distributor cap screw on the back side? Its not visible and in a VERY tight place?

Tape the 1/4'' socket onto a long 1/4'' extension. You may need to push the cowl seal back to get a straighter line of attack.

I do not have a compression gauge so I am trying to find TDC using my finger... I have read that you will feel a "sucking" when TDC is reached....I have rotated the engine a few times and I either feel air pushing on my finger or nothing...can someone tell me the correct way to find TDC ?

Air will be pushed past your finger as the piston reaches TDC.

So basically at the point where the air stops passing by would be the top of the stroke? How do I know if its the right stroke?

Put your finger in #1 hole
Have some one jog the starter until you feel air pushing your finger out.
Manually turn motor till balancer and timing tab point to 6 BTDC
Check under cap to see if rotor is pointing to #1

You already have a finger, no need to buy a gauge to find TDC #1.
Sounds like you got it right in post 48. Did you jog the motor till you felt your finger get pushed out and then turn balancer till it lined up to TDC ??

I manually turned the engine with a socket and breaker bar...I turned it til the moment the pushing stopped...then backed the engine up a hair...then checked the rotor and it was pointing to number one...then checked the balancer and it was at Zero...didnt make any changes...just lined up that way.

Yeah, forget the compression guage....but get yourself a FUEL PRESSURE guage, about $35. at AutoZone, with it you can eliminate leaky injectors or a fuel pressure regulator, very easy to test, we can walk you through it after you get the guage! You should also spend 20-$25. on a Digital voltage ohm meter, we can help you use it for checking the injector ohms. Your plugs and cat are telling you that you're dumping fuel (flooding the engine). IF you do this we can help narrow it down. The other things that can cause flooding are vacumn leaks, bad 02 sensor or ECM. Timing sounds close enough!

already bought the compression guage...it was only $6 so no big deal...I already have a digital voltmeter...I will have to check into getting a fuel pressure guage.

I am thinking about bitting the bullet and buying a new ECM...its only $80...think its a good idea or not ??

Trouble shooting is a science and it's best to test things rather than throw money at it. The tools we need for these cars are the DVOM (you have that) timing light, FUEL PRESSURE guage (an absolute) a noid light is very nice to check for injector pulses, and a compression guage (you have that) a vacumn guage is nice too. The FP guage will either confirm or eliminate alot of problems...and you've certainly confirmed you're dumping fuel. It could very well be a bad ECM, but if you're keeping the car the guage is a must have and will definetly save you money down the road. BTW, you may want to check your oil to see if it's contaminated with fuel, should be able to smell it.

Dumb question...I was browsing around for a guage and saw a few that say Fuel injection test kit...is that wayt I am looking for?
I found one that said Fuel pump\vacuum tester...and another that said..Fuel injection pump tester ...
Thanks in advance.

Bought mine at AutoZone, says fuel pressure test kit. It has the guage, with a rubber hose and a valve on the end.....the valve is kinda like a tire pump valve, this connects to the schrader valve on your vet fuel rail (passenger side rear) looks like a tire valve. There's also a clear tube with the guage, it's for bleed off.

I checked with Hypertech and they say their chip is only replacing the larger of the two...Thats not the one I need.... Please help.....

Your shadetree wrench may also have the lifters adjusted wrong.
