I have decided not to rebuild my trans myself but rather take it to a shop, as im not qualified to do it myself. Now my question is, I have been quoted $1770 for removal, repair, and reinstall. with 18 month/36k mile warrenty.
the rebuild also includes some upgraded internals, like servo and other items i cant remember. this shop has also rebuilt my Expedition trans aswell. they have a good rep here in the area.
is my price good or keep shopping?
Depends on what internals you are getting. It sounds reasonable if he is doing Zpak clutches and a shift kit(I recommend TransGo). The servo probably does not need upgraded most Vette trannys have a special one anyway.Find out exactly what he is putting in and post it for a better answer.
Thats a great price. I ended rebuilding my own. No problems whatsoever. I think I spent about 500 dollars in parts. If I were to charge myself labor at 45 dollars an hour, , and it took me about 35 hours...(1st timer) ..thats about 1600 dollars in labor alone. That warranty is awesome.
Make certain that they install at least
1) Beast sunshell
2) hardened pump rings (inexpensive)
3) "better than stock" 3/4 pack (crucial for longevity).
4) borg warner Sprags...there are two of them.
To me, the servo stuff is not necessary. I would spend the money on upgraded internal parts before doing the transgo kit. You can always put that in without removing the tranny. For instance, get a decent converter. Pete K's got an awesome price on them.
Many folks are selling a beefed up tranny for that price alone without the install labor.

That's what about what I paid for a stock rebuild. That is a reasonable price.
I do recall hearing 3/4 pack....not sure what it is. also about hardend rings...i really need to get a full list of what is going into it. I havn't taken my car in as of yet. need to fix the family car first. air ride suspention broken. feels like more money
I got my trans fixed removal, rebuild and installed for $1944.00 that included shift kit, new sprags, new 3/4 pack, all hardend ring and had engine coolent changed while it was off the ground. All with the 18 month/36k mile warrenty. I'm just happy to have my car to enjoy again. Not to mention, the wife and son are out of town for a week.
The price is about right, if you take the tranny out yourself with out a lift like i did, it aint fun.
The rebuild is not hard for a tranny shop cause thats all they do.
I got lucky i found one on ebay for $300 for a wrecked C4 low miles.
It is till running good after a 20 months, If it goes out again ill most likely take the old core, let them rebuild it, put it in myself or ill sell the car before it goes out.
Good luck,
I was just happy to cruise with the top off today. Also, my car was a couple of kids first corvette experience to night. I was brave enough to let them take it for a ride. But they will never for get the first time to ride in a Corvette. I know I havn't forgot! Thats what having the car is for, the experience!
