I have a 1985 (little red corvette) -- There is a sensor located between the # 6 and #8 plugs.. It looks like it has a single wire going to it... I removed the elect. connector ( it has a crack in it so I was going to replace it but I don' know what sensor it is)and the check enging light DOES NOT come on and it looks like it is somekind of vacuum sensor... Can't find it in the repair manual.. Does anyone have any ideas... Thanks $300vett
Right hand (passenger) side - rear of engine - between #6 and #8 plug in the head - that would be the fan switch. Works differently depending on if the car has one or two (auxiliary) cooling fans. If a two fan system that switch is what turns on the Auxiliary fan. If a single fan system that switch is One of the ways (the ECM being the other) that the cooling fan will run.
It's a coolant temperature switch - the Factory switch is supposed to close at about 235 degrees F.
No connection to the ECM - it isn't anything to do with the "engine management" systems.
I'd suggest that your repair manual ought to be thrown in the trash - get the Helms book...
The electrical connector is the same as the knock sensor. On my '85, a previous owner had replaced both wires/ends - but he mixed them up. He complained that even with super no-lead and two bottles of octane booster it still would knock if you got into it very deep!
