Default l98 Idle Problems

I tried to install a kit that turns my fan on at 195 and accedentally hooked it up to the hot wire (Red/Black), instead of the trigger wire (Green/White). Of course this blew my fan relay and I dont know the damage from there. For some reason after it happened the car will not idle. I checked the engine code and it says 34 which is MAF. I replaced the MAF, both MAF relays, TPS, both fan relays, and it still will not idle. The car starts and runs fine if you hold your foot on it but as soon as you let off, it dies. Does anyone know anything about what might be wrong? Its a stock 87 with the 4+3.

Sounds like the idle air valve is fully closed and not working anymore.
But in this case the car should still run on the base rpm of 450 if the throttle plate adjusting screw is on the correct (factory) setting and all other parts around are working fine.

I haven't thought of that...I am going to try it. Thanks.

I don't think the IAC is the problem.

Apparently the MAF and the fan are on the same circuit. I started my '94 the other day with the MAF connector disconnected, and another connector on the air intake hose disconnected.

It started and ran rough. ALSO, the fan came on immediately . So they are operationally related. I powered down, cleared the computer, and plugged in the 2 sensors, and fired it up without a hitch (and the fan didn't come on, which it shouldn't have then).

Are you sure your fan relay is toast? I'm guessin' that you only cooked a ground, which is common to the MAF and the fan.

ed.: It could NOT be a common ground that links them, since when the MAF connector is NOT connected, the fan DOES come on....

Isn´t the fan coming on if an error code is set? On diagnost mode the fan is coming on, that´s for sure.

I fixed the electrical nightmares on one of my '89s by replacing all of the relays. It took an FSM to find them all.

It was the IAC. I replaced it and she runs like a dream. It is a good thing I did replace it because in the process I found out that the little U shaped coolant bypass hose that goes from the throttle body to the intake manifold was leaking. That would have left me on the side of the road, so double thanks!
