I've seen 30 MPG on my digital dash multiple times depending on how I drive. Today I managed to record it with my digital camera just by chance. Click video below.
Off camera it reached as high as 4.3 MPG crusing downhill, i.e 43 MPG apperently. How accurate are these things? I stayed in the high 20's on a 1 1/2 hour trip which I see regularly. But occasionally it goes over 30.
And why would it not just ready 30.0 instead of starting back over at 3.0? Your thoughts.
Something wrong here, 4.3 MPG is not 43 MPG, looks like it may be randomly reseting itself, the average MPG should not vary so much unless it had just been reset.

I just made a trip from Vegas to "your neck of the woods" Morro Bay
I Filled the tank to the top wrote the milage down drove to the Bay
"80 with the cruis on" filled the tank when I got there and did the math
27 MPG. I also would see 60 + .......going down hill !!!
If I could just figure out how to get where I want to go going...
DOWN HILL ONLY.
That was going about 70 MPH. I decelerated and accelerated in that vid just to get the reading to move for the camera. It sat still with the cruise on.
My '86 coupe reads the same way at/after 30mpg average. I have found the onboard computer to be very accurate with stock injectors up to 29.9mpg. I have Lingenfelter headers, no smog and true dual exhaust....but stock injectors. I make the 800 mile trip from New Mexico to SoCal and back quite often and always get over 30 mpg at 75 mph.
The computer measures distance by the electronic speedo impulses and measures fuel by counting the injector pulses and calculates the fuel consumption that way. If you change injectors, the computer still measures the pulses, but the actual amount of fuel would be different so the read out would not be accurate.

i'l get up to speed on the hwy and since my cruise is kaput I'll average about 30+ and get 70+ down hill live in a place that you will always be driving down hill would be nice.... And for a 25 yr old vette and getting better gas milage that a euro compact in the city( avg is about 21 mpg )
I get 86mpg going downhill, but I think thats on "instant"
Yea that is what I see also when going down a decent grade.
Best I got on a (440mile) trip on I-80 was 31+mpg but I was driving for economy, i.e. letting speed build as much as possible down hill, then feathering the accelerator to maintain an uphill reading of >30mpg till I slowed to the posted limit where I let cruize take over. It was kind of a fun way to amuse myself on the 7hr drive...
I get anywhere from 27 to 30 average on my trip computer on long highway trips, cruise set at 75 +/- 4 mph. On down hills I see the 99 show up on the instant on. It is a shame my wife and I have 7 cars between us and our 94 LT1 6speed is our "economy" car.
'86e.
Since I installed 128 heads, I regularly see 32 mpg straight and level, 75 mph.
I can drive almost 9 hours on the freeway before I fill up. The car is great on gas! always has been.
It's mostly stock, but with a few mods.
It also requires premium fuel with flat top pistons and 58cc heads.
Well, I thought I was getting good mileage, guess not. I also run 100 octane to please my engines 12:1 compression ratio, ends up costing me $5 a gallon instead of the $4 I could pay for premium.
99 instant miles per gallon. I guess my car just drinks gas, like I said, 100mph in neutral (900 rpms) going down a hill, 86 mpg.
Alot of people just don't know how fuel efficient these cars can be, if driven properly.
