I have a 1987, L98, Auto Trans. One day I noticed that my check engine light came on, then went back off within 2-3 minutes while driving on the highway. My speedometer is now not working.
I changed the vehicle speed sensor since I pulled code 24. I took it for a test drive and the speedometer still does not work.
The only thing I did not do was take the negative battery cable off and put it back on. I hear that this resets any codes you may have. Is this true and could this be why my speedo still is not working? Also, the check engine light did not come back on after changing the sensor.
When you changed the sensor, did you look and see if the speedo drive gear (inside the extension housing) had any chips in the teeth? Just a thought if the negative battery reset doesn't work...

The speedo gear looked fine, no chipped teeth. I disconnected the battery, waited about 20 minutes and reconnected. Still nothing, no speedometer. Also my cruise and trip odometer do not work due to the speed sensor problem.
I am wondering if there is something wrong inside my instrument cluster. I have heard that the circuit boards can become damaged. Everything else works fine, RPM, battery voltage, oil pressure, oil temp, coolant temp, etc...
