Default Help with Bias Spring

I removed the oem brake bias spring on my '93. Any tips on how to compress the new spring enough to install the little snap ring that holds it in?

With all the bias springs being installed and some of the stories of parts flying I have read I have decided to document this information so as to help others. I decided to do a test run on my spare master to figure out how I was going to do and what tools were going to work best when my spring arrived.

Hear is how I did it;
- Follow DRM instructions. This is additional info to get the spring in the valve
- Remove master from car and end nut that holds valve in and small tapered spring.
- Strike master on end to remove valve from master, (use wood). Remove O-ring and metal spacer.
- Record all configurations of parts removed.
- Take a 19mm deep socket and place in vice vertically.
- Wrap the valve in a paper towel to protect it and slip into socket so C clip is up.
- Take snap ring pliers and remove C-clip and spring.
- Drop new spring in valve.
- Get a straight blade screwdriver wide enough to depress spring into valve.
- Place C-clip thru screwdriver and grab clip with snap ring pliers and place screwdriver onto spring.
- Press spring with screwdriver down into cylinder, lower C-clip with pliers and snap in.

If you mess up, you wont loose the C clip. Getting it in the first time is easy.

- lube piston valve and re-assemble master in proper order.
- Bench bleed master and install back in car.
- Bleed master at fittings and or system.

Thank you. Now I just need a vice and 19mm deep socket.

I live pretty close to a bunch of dealerships and just asked one of their mechanics to do it for me. He did it with no problems free of charge.

I give up. I can't find a screwdriver or anything that will depress the spring yet is narrow enough to get the snap ring around. Off to the mechanic at lunch.

Put the screwdriver thru the snap ring first. Then lower the screwdriver into the spring and push down. If the ring does not snap in the first time, it will still be on the screwdriver. You can not snap the ring in till the spring is down compressed and the shaft is round.

If the snap-ring setup is anything like the multiple ones in the 700R4 transmission, you may find it easier to buy a pair of snap ring pliers from Sears for about $6. If you can't go to the mechanic today, this might be a simple solution - just bring the snap ring with you and select the right pliers.

Just a suggestion,

Jonathan

Got it! Took one other thing - patience. Thanks for the help, guys.
