this answer may be right under my nose. but i just wanted to get some suggestions. the temp on the gauge reads 230 within the first five minutes of driving. they even reached 250 for a while and went back down until they rose steadily back to 230 before i came into work. is this a fan problem? i put some coolant in it yesterday because it was doing the same thing.

suggest starting simple.
check for debris in front of AC Condensor (the thing in front of the radiator). Lay under the front of the car and look up just before the plastic air dam.
check for debris in between the AC condensor and radiator.
Check to see if at least one fan is coming on at the 230 temp.

When my 94 LT-1 was overheating, it was due to the fans not coming on. The fan temp switch...(i think thats what its called) which ever switch is read digitally it was reading very low, and the engine temp was high so it never told the fans to come on.
That fixed it but still in traffic or long periods of idling my temp will reach about 230... IS THIS NORMAL?????
Every other car you own has a grill in the front to suck air through, the C4 does not. They are bottom fed, and their cooling air is hot off the pavement. There is no way for the temperature to stay down unless the thing is moving at speed. At idle, they will all go to their fan temperature setting no matter where it is and no matter what the stat is set at, if left alone long enough, assuming its not frigid outside.
think about it, it sounds like a combo of things.
low coolant, bad thermostat, lean running, bad temp gauge sensor, trash in front of the radiator, pastic bag sucked up in the intake tract, etc.
Also sounds like the engine needs burping
