I have a 86 Vette,
It has a new water pump
and thermostat,
what is happening is the
coolant is not circulating
thru the radiator, at times
the temp. is fine, but when it
start to overheat I find that the
coolant is not circulating and overflowing
into the overflow tank, I was told to check
the belt tensioner? I was reading in the forum
about removing the radiator and cleaning out the
surface between the radiator and condener.
First thing, take out the t-stat and drop it in boiling water and make sure it works.Better still check it with a thermometer, borrow your mothers. Make sure it's not in upside down.Pulling the rad and cleaning everything is the number one cure for all vette cooling problems and it's free.Make sure the filler cap is OK.They are cheap. If the stat is the problem make sure you replace it with a 'fail open' type.$10 NAPA.Also make sure the bottom hose has not collapsed. I doubt it's the tensioner that's a problem.
Tensioner shouldn't be the cause, you would see effects across the board if that was the case (lower voltage, tighter steering, higher temps, crappy a/c).
If you need to let air out of the system, instead of burping it, you can drill two small holes in the flange of the tstat to eliminate air being trapped for good.
Don't think removing the stat would have given the same results if it was air in the system...But I would drill holes in the tstat anyways. Always a good idea, two that are between 1/16" and 1/8" will do the trick.
Good luck finding the problem, cooling systems are real simple, but can be hard to diagnose at times. I was hunting an overheating problem for a long time that turned out to be a nasty air bubble behind the tstat. The thermostat never opened until I drilled the holes!
