Welcome to the forum!

Things can be tight in the old engine compartment but that's why these cars are so sleek. Most plug and wire changes are difficult and some are really difficult.....attack the more difficult ones from underneath the car. I've broken a few plugs due to tight clearances and scraped knuckles....I've spent so much time on my back under my car I feel like a *****.

Good Luck & Welcome!

Changing plug wires on an LT1 is one of the jobs I might consider paying someone to do. Its a bitch.

I am a very old shade tree mechanic. I recently changed the wires and plugs on my 93. It was a bitch but not as bad as I anticipated. The only thing I removed to help was the belt and complete tensioner assembly. Buy some new 8mm wire looms to go with your new wires. Every one of mine was bridle and broke. Later! Frank

I just did mine on my 94 a few months ago. Passenger side is easy. On drivers side, I removed the belt tensioner and loosened up the power steering pump and moved it forward just a little. That gave me just enough room to get one wire in at a time. Take your time, I didnt find it all that bad.

If you change the plugs, #8 is the worse, in my opinion. On drivers side, just remove the small inner fender piece of plastic. You'll get to the plugs without much problem.

The whole job does take time.

Don't forget the anti-sieze compound for the new plugs, too.

I used a half-inch diameter of rubber hose to coax the new plugs into their sockets, too, to prevent the possibility of cross-threading, too.

Thank God for the clamshell hood and dedicated "work bench" (i.e. front tires), though. Ever swap plugs/wires on an F-body? Talk about a ****!

Thank you all very much for the quick reply!!!
This weekend I will try. Why did they make the last two wires on the passanger side straight boot?? seems 90"s would have worked just fine. What do you recommend as far as plugs and wires to use?? Called local dealer for price to change plugs and wire he said $640 plus tax. I'm a old mechanic and It"ll be a cold day in He#$ before that happens. thanks again for the welcome hope to chat again soon..

I used OEM plugs and wires. As far as plugs goes, many favor non-AC brands and I don't really think it makes much difference, so I just put in the same thing that the car came with.

As far as wires goes, I got OEM from the dealer and I was a little disappointed, the lengths did not match up and they were not labeled. If I had known that, I would have considered some other brands. From what I can tell, the only ones that have the numbers on them are the ones installed at the factory.

That being said, if I was doing it over, I would make a lot of sketches and take a lot of pictures as to how the wires are routed and then remove all of them at once instead of removing and installing one at a time. Then I would match up the new ones lengthwise as best as I could and label them. I would take a sharpie marker and put numbers on them at both ends and every 6". When you are handling them with oily hands, some of those numbers will rub off, so the more the better.

The advice about getting new wire looms is a good idea, especially if you get bigger wires. I did mine when I was doing the opti and water pump, so I had some things off of the car, but as others have said, removing the belt and tensioner is a good idea. I would also remove the power steering pump pulley. This is easy to do if you have the puller or can borrow it from Autozone, and opens up that whole area. At the very least you will need to loosen up the ps pump to thread the wires one at at time in between the pump and a bracket.

I would NOT pay someone to do this job. It is not a job that requires any unique skill, just time and patience. Most anyone that will pay to do it will not take the care and patience that you can to do the job right.

I thought the Taylor wires were the best bang for the buck and used those. Along with some $2/ea NGK plugs its well under $100 total

#8 is easy.....jack the car up and remove/install from the bottom. It actually is one of the easier plugs to change that way.
