Default Coolant Temp sensor and code 36

Could a broken coolant temp sensor (the one located in the water pump) have anything to do with the code 36 im getting? Just replaced the opti, and now the car starts runs for 20 seconds and dies. This will happen 2 or 3 times then stay running. But the check engine light comes on with the code 36. The sensor is broke off at the fitting.
Thanks!!

The ECT sensor you describe also feeds info to the ECM. With it broken you will never get into closed loop, and strange things can happen. Is the code 36 active or historical?

The code 36 is active, i removed the neg cable off the battery to clear the code. Started it, it stalled then it set the code. After that i started to remove things to get to the Opti and noticed the broken sensor.

The code 36 is for Opti high res pulses. The coolant temp sensor should give you a 14 or 15.
