Can anyone help ID this hose? It is wire tied to a plastic wire harness which runs along the drivers side wheel well, ending in the front near the charcoal cannister. The other end is connected to a "Y". One hose runs up under the distributor, the other to the housing which the throttle cable comes from. The open end of the hose has vacuum. Was wondering if it should be connected somewhere. I can't find any connectors or nipples where it would attach. I was hoping to post pictures but can't figure that out yet!

Without a picture, who knows. There is a round ball in the area of the left headlight that is a vacuum reservoir.

Can find a round ball, perhaps that is missing.

Is this the hose you speak of? Pics off of my '91.

If it is, one end goes to the driver's side front well and attaches to the vaccuum canister bottom (the black sphere). The side that goes behind the distributor goes to the 2 way check valve for the AC or cruise control - can't remember which one. The other hose goes to the cruise control diaphragm (circular thing near the ECM).

Yes, that is the hose. I felt under the cannister, but didn't feel anything to connect to. Will investigate it further. Thanks.

It sounds like you are missing the vacuum storage tank. Vacuum line would come from plenum to check valve/tee, one to HVAC and the other to cruise control and vacuum storage tank(the ball pictured above).

Is this absolutely necessary to have? Does it effect performance? If so where could I get one and are there other options such as plugging the open end of the hose?

I would think that without the cannister and the hose left unplugged, you would have a vacuum leak. Is your cruise control working properly, or do you have a high idle, by any chance? Just an idea.

Yeah, you can plug it, but your cruise control may disengage at times and your HVAC air control(floor/vent/defrost) may not work so well either as noted by Agent86. The vacuum storage acts to maintain a fairly constant level of vacuum at all times, especially when plenum is delivering low vacuum.

Cruise control works fine, idle is @ 600 rpm at normal operation temp. Guess I have to try to find a metal ball for it. Is it vented or a sealed ball? Maybe I could find something somewhere I could use.

It is a sealed unit. Your local parts supplier may have generic vacuum storage tanks.
Try posting in the Parts 4 sale section, I'm sure someone here has one lying around.

Recyclers like vette2vette probably have a million of them.

Contemporary Corvette (link on my site) is in SE PA and likely has such a used unit.

I pulled the vacuum line off the ball so I could do some vacuum checks, and the damn nipple broke off. I'll call the dealer tommorrow to see how much they will let one of those Vacuum tanks go for. I know they sell on Ecklers and what not for $22. Anyways, that line held vacuum fine.

The vacuum line coming from behind the distributor that connects to the 3-way check valve, is it supposed to hold vacuum? Cause mine didn't when I checked it directly. Though, I did have the programmer out as I was checking some things.

I also checked the line coming from the plenum that goes to the check valve and it didn't hold vacuum. I pulled it and found it was cracked in half. For now, I'll tape it up with some electrical tape and check to see if that line holds vacuum. Though, it looks like I could just replace that with regular vacuum line. Though one end is a little bigger than the other, so I'd probably have to T two together, or find the right size that would fit on both ends.

Oh, and that 3-way check valve that I had put on a few months ago from Autozone broke off when I was pulling one of the vacuum lines off. So, I'll just get one from the dealer.

Are there any other vacuum lines that I can check? The line going to the vacuum ball is good, but the line coming from the distributor didn't hold vacuum. Though, maybe it isn't supposed to.
