FastRob,
If you recently had your battery disconnected the computer will search for the correct idle. Mine does it every time I disconnect the battery. Allow it to idle for a while after driving maybe 3-4 miles and see it it straightens out. Mine usually goes back to a steady idle after I do that. Good luck.
Do what he said first. Then if it does it after the car is warmed up, disconnect the MAF and see if the idle improves any. You could also tap the MAF and see if the idle changes. This would mean a bad MAF, and youll have to change the relays with it. Otherwise, if its surging when warm, you should take a look at the IAC valve, may be dirty.
It's not too hard, plan a couple of hours of daylight to take it off ( 4 bolts, two hoses, two wire connectors and throttle/cruise/trans cables ).
Once off, remove the screws to the IAC ( which looks like a small cylindrical device sticking into the side of the throttle body.) Remove the IAC motor by sliding it out, and clean it with throttle body cleaner and a toothbrush. Do not try to reposition it at all.
The throttle body will need to be cleaned the same way, with throttle body cleaner and a toothbrush. When all is clean, just reverse the disassembly steps and reinstall it with a new throttle body gasket.
This will usually cure a fluctuating idle problem, as well as increase idle-to-throttle transition smoothness.
Come on, jump in there and get your hands dirty! It is not a major job but it is impossible to remove the IAC without taking loose the throttle body. Probably needs a good cleaning anyway. I believe there is a "Tech Tip" on this procedure on this site.
Good luck and if you don't have a repair manual, get one.
:yesnod:
oh ok now i know what you are talking about i thought you were talking about the plenum got them confused thank god it wasnt what i thought it was ok now i can do this no problem i do have a manual to fix the car top to bottem got it today so i will let you know how it turnd out thank you all for the help people in hear are so helpfull and nice i love this place  :seeya
Before you reinstall your IAC valve check the length from o-ring to end of pintle. On my '95(dont know if your measurement should be same) the manual said to adjust to 1 1/8 inch. I cleaned mine and adjusted it, but still have this pulsing or stumbling idle. :mad  :bs
