Default 3 O2 sensor questions

3 questions... car in question is my '91 L98 with headers.
1. 02 sensor was moved to collector when headers were installed. If it is not getting hot enough to do its intended job, will it throw a code?
2. Supposedly an 02 sensor won't work correctly until it hits about 600 degrees. The exhaust system at the collectors doesn't get that hot???
3. Besides fuel economy and emissions tanking, will performance be hurt by a poorly performing 02 sensor?
Thanks guys...slowly but surely, I'm trying to learn

Don't know for sure without datalogging but you likely are not staying in closed loop as the 02 sensor is too cold. I know with mine, when the 02 sensor was in the header collector it wasn't getting hot enough. There is a bung in the #7 cylinder primary tube that was plugged, so I moved the 02 sensor there and put the plug in the collector bung. No problems now. As a side note, I now installed a LC-1 wideband in which the 02 sensor that came with the kit is heated, feeds the wideband gauge a wideband signal, and also feeds the car's computer the narrowband signal so I scrapped the stock narrowband sensor.

i'd like to nod and agree like I knew what the hell you're talking about, but that would be wrong!

When I put headers on my 86 I installed a heated O2. Can't hurt.

On my 96 they are all heated.

Are you having problems?

If your sensor only has 1 black wire going to it, you really need to convert to a heated 3 wire. On the 3 wire, the black wire goes to the computer, take either white wire and ground it to frame or ?. Take the last white wire and hook it up to a switched ignition source so it is only on when ignition is on. Fuel pump relay or fan relays work are good switched sources. Even in hot Texas my sensors would come out of loop at idle or sitting at a light.
