Default Which Diagnostic Software

OK, I'm looking at Datamaster and if I understand their website correctly they require a serial port DB9 connection.

The cable I purchased is USB. Can Datamaster use USB, do I have it wrong?

If not Datamaster, here's a link of other software. Which one do you guys use that will support an USB based cable?

None of my laptops have DB9 RS232 connectivity.

Thanks.

The Datamaster software will generally work when you use a Belkin F5U103 or FTDI US232B adapter. Not all USB adapters are created equal but the Belkins seem to be the most reliable and usable.

Thanks guys...the physical connection isn't the problem

The issue is the software may or may not have drivers that support USB.

Again, the cable goes directly to the OBDI connector, and connects to my laptop USB. There is no physical interface problem.

I am wondering if Datamaster has the drivers for USB, will it recognize a USB cable? If I am plugged in PHYSICALLY will it work LOGICALLY?

Their site is unclear on the issue.

I can't tell from their website.

it will recognize a usb, first dedicate a comm port, and 'enable handshake' in the program (quicker communication is good), and you might need a resistor in the cable.

I have a selectable cable. It has a jumper for resistor or not. I believe I do need a resistor, at least I knew when I ordered it a while back. How would I know for sure? Can I damage it if I connect it with or without a resistor and it does not need one?

Using window 98 or older ......says yes- it will work but most USB serial are not compatible with the ALDL baud rate

Yes, that assumes your cable from the OBD1 connector is DB9. I don't have that. My connector is straight USB.

Mine cable is like this:

you will know, if the fans will come on w/key on the 'on' position, this will mean try a different position. Try middle position first, should not damage anything. Other 2 positions will either recognize the comm port or not. Before you start the car, key on the 'on' position NOT START or RUN, pull record data window down, set to monitor and record off, you will see alll data w/out running, if not try other position.

Once you are there, you can record /monitor. Make sure screen saver timer at least 40 min. along w/all other power options (hard drive etc.) when running on battery to at least 40 min, this will give you max. record time.

FWIW, Datamaster is free to try. So try it.

I use it with a USB adapter. There's a check box on one of the Datamaster menus for using USB. I don't recall offhand where exactly.

It should work fine with your cable, most of the problems come when you use a serial to USB converter which you are not.

Check ouit http://www.ftdichip.com/FTDrivers.htm
If you have no luck, PM me your address and I will email you the file

The software drivers for the USB/Serial adapter should allow the diagnostic software to work. I've used them when tuning FAST systems (which is serial only) and Big Stuff 3 and they both work without an issue.
