Default Dummies Book for Data Logging?

OK - I will admit I have no clue what to do, to know if my car is really running the way it should! It sounds ok, but that is just a lumpy loud idle. How can I really tell if it is running correct?

I'm somewhat tech savvy as I have been in the IT field for a long time and know my way around computers pretty well, but I guess I'm missing the fundamentals here about data logging.

I have a laptop, but I'm not sure what program to buy or what ALDL cable to buy for my 1994 LT-1. I have read the stickies but it still turns into pea soup for me about half way through.

All I want to know is my A/F ratio is ok, and that my valves are adjusted correctly and that my timing is a optimal.

I have a PCMforLess tune in the computer now. I guess thats why it started right up and is idling so well. But I still worry about the other stuff, and I don't have $675 to throw at the dyno tune right now.

Help me see the light.

google Craig Moates. I can't seem to find his business card, but I've done business with him and bought one of his cables and run tunepro RT. But mines for an 87. He answered emails from me and actually walked me through a few things via phone. I'm sure he can put you in the right direction.

buying/downloading, logging/scanning software is needed and some understanding of terms values is necessary in understanding what the car is doing when running in either CL. or OL.
here are a couple of links that may help get you started:

this one is not lt-1 specific but a must read:

This is the write up I was going to point to. Capturing data and reprogramming is easy. Understanding the tables and how everything works is the more difficult part. Go here for the cable... http://www.moates.net/ I believe you will need, ALDU1 and CABL1 XtremeALDL and NewCABL1 Combo [Model: ALDU1_CABL1] for $80. Download the trial version of Tunercat and Datamaster TTS to get started. You will need to purchase the definition file for Tuner cat for about $20. To do wideband air/fuel tunning I believe you will need, Innovate LC-1 Lambda Cable w/ O2 Sensor [Model: LC-1 w/ O2]. You may also want a gauge to read the output. I've been wanting to try feeding the A/F data back into the PCM and then Datamaster through my unused 0-5v EGR input or the AC input with a switch. The process and conversion formula is on the Z28 forum. It's also been done here in the C5 section. Too busy with another project at the moment. Before purchasing anything check all of the above with Moates and verify for your application.
