Hitting it with a block of wood and hammer does sound better than the alternative I used. However, is there a way I can get past the crossmember? I attemted to use a pry bar from atop the engine bay only to discover it pretty much shatters the opti... But lucky me I have one on its way. I did discover that with the cover off the opti comes out without removing the balancer??? So is there a way perhaps that I can remove the cap on the new one and put it in as 2 peices??? Ill have to take it apart to rtv it anyway.... I suppose if I can get in there to take out the cap screws it might be possible... What do you guys think? If it works this could very well alter the feeling people get when they're told they're opti is juped
NO...NO...NO.!! Put the crack pipe away and pay attention.

Jack the car up from the passenger side about 3 feet. Look forward and you will see the access point to the pully/balancer. Go to home depot or lowes and get a 4 foot piece of wood ( ~ 1" X 2" ).. Get under the car and use a 3 or 5 pound sledge and bang off the balancer/pully. NOW, put the wood agains the inner most part of the pully balancer, as it is a 2 piece deal which is held together by hard rubber. IF you bang on the outside, you will distort the rubber "bushing" on the pully/balancer and it will wobble after re-install....ie, you will have destroyed it. As, mentioned, give the INSIDE of the balancer/pully a few good whacks, and then turn the crank and repeat. The balancer/pully will come off, I guarantee it.

But for christs sake, replace the entire Opti and dont attempt to replace just the High voltage portion. If you got antifreeze in your Opti, you've also messed up the Optical sensor and/or Optical wheel....

and please.....don't love this response.........just follow it !!!!

I am having a hellacious starting issue with my 95. today I was driving down the road when all of the sudden I lost engine power. The engine seemed to have shut off. I imediately pulled over into a parking lot. When I stopped I noticed the car had an extremely aggresve Idle as if only one or two cylinders were firing. I turned the key off. I popped the hood and stepped out just in time to see smoke rising from under the hood. I though D*%$. Overheated... To my suprise the upper hose busted about in the middle. I pulled it walked to a parts store and replaced it. filled it with coolant and tried to start it... For some reason, it wouldnt start. All kinds of things raced in my mind. Optispark, head gasket, etc. etc. I narrowed it down to what I considered spark or compresion. Rented a compression tester and all seems ok, unless I missed something. pulled the spark plugs, put them back in their boot and ran a wire from the plug to the block for grounding purposes. turned it over and no spark. I hosed down the optispark with wd40 to displace any coolant that might have got inside since coolant will not evap on its own. (gotta give it a little convincing) Let it dry, and did the spark test again, walla, spark. I put the plugs back in and turned it over again... no luck. But there is a change... It seems to kick back a little after I stop turning it over. And then if I keep trying it will eventually make a slight back fire sound out of the exhaust and then once in a while also out of the intake... I checked the plugs for water, oil or coolant, nothing found. I checked the oil cap and dip stick for water or whiting, nothing... Im lost as to what to do next and am really looking to find a way to identify the absolute problem as I do not want to spend silly amounts to replace working parts... I am offering a reward to anyone who can bring me the solution or a testing procedure I can perform that will Identify to me the problem. I wont anounce the exact reward amount, but I will say it is in the tripple digits... Ill be checking both my email as well as this post regularly...
I had the same thing hapen to me. I would also set for days and then all of a sudden start. I replased every part of my ignition system. but would still do it. Then i put in a new Distributor and that did it. Never had a prob agen. So replace your Distributor.

Pull balancer off, leave hub in place, turn crank with socket and rachet to alignit , then remove opti. Use one of the screws from top of the tuned port throttle top, wrap duct tape arond threads of screw. Dis assembly opti and if bad replace it. Don't forget to check the four pins for the electrical connector at the opti and the opti connector female side. You may have bad connection or bad opti.

Yep water and Opti's don't mix. Likely shorting or not enough fire to fire cyl.
When you take off the water pump be sure you change the seals .
The one on the timing cover you can use a small high tensile screwdriver to pop it out.
use a tap to thread the weep hole on the new water pump you decided to buy to be done with it and put in a ninety degree fitting that you can hang a little hose off of to take any water well past your opti in case your water pump ever fails.
I put in a link w/pics that I followed that worked fine.
The harmonic balancer most likely will only have to be moved a bit and you can use a puller through the hole in front of it for that purpose. Mine was aftermarket and did not have to come off. Change the seal on the timing cover where the opti gos on.
This is the best link I found , he even invented an esay to find tool to install the water pump seal w/o dammage to the rubber part.

make sure that you have the notches on your distributor pin lined up with the notches inside the distributor and where the distributor connects to the cam. I pulled my distributor once and did not line the pins up and my car did the exact same thing

Default Problem solved

The problem is the optispark got wet just as the old distributors with points would do, you would be better off replacing it with a better make. Leonard, Dallas

Your '86 has a distributor.
His '95 has an optispark.
Different monsters in different locations that do the same thing in the end.

Really glad I have an '86 also (don't care much for the opti).
