I need a new MAF sensor and I have someone who has one made for an 85 and claims it will work on my 87 L98, just not the other way around. Any one else can verify that? Will I sacrifice any power or any complications?

What brand MAF/part # do you want......select a MAF brand then see remarks about see all vehicles this product fits:
I've purchased a Micro Tech MAF and have been running it without complications for over 1 year now. I went with the Micro Tech MAF because it is dirt cheap and has a lifetime replacement warranty....they say they will replace it for free as long as the MAF is not modified in any way (screen removal....ect).
The system used on the '85 is different than the '86-'89 MAF system. The MAFs also have different part numbers. I wouldnt chance it and go with the one you need. NAPA has them for about $200 (same thing with the warranty).
I can guarantee an 86-89 will work on an '85 because I'm running an '86 on my '85 right now and have been for some time. I see no reason why the opposite wouldn't be true. It'd be easy enough to find out, put the '85 MAF on your car and if it works then buy it.

I have run a 1985 MAF on my 1986 and it worked fine. What I have noticed is that all MAF will read slightly different. I have 4 MAF and when I switch them on the same car my readings are never the same from sensor to sensor, they are close but they can vary by 10%.
