I don't know about the rest of you, but I was not confusing Helm with anything. I have bought the Helm's manuals for every Chey (12 total) that I have owned, including the new vette that I bought in 1969, and 7 others since, including my '08.

I don't think anyone thought you did. However the use of Helms manual VS FSM sometimes causes confusion. I am grateful GM provides it. Try getting something similar from Jaguar.

Well, if your FSM,Helms, Haynes, or whatever Bible dictates the following, would you blindly follow it !! ?? A lot of unnecessary work.

Helms book says that I am going to need to loosen motor mounts, remove oil cooler, and raise engine to remove the crankshaft balancer to access the distro. Do I really need to do all that?! (I was hoping that I could get at it from the top, without even lifting the car)

Do you need to put the engine at top dead center to install the optispark?

No, the opti only fits one way..... (both Opti versions...)

However, some folks have forced them on incorrectly indexed....

I work with a jr. tech who learned that lesson the hard way after taking off and having to reinstall many parts by following the manual. Items that had no impact on the job he was doing. Of course if somethings in the way it's usually faster to remove it than to work around it.

6 water pump bolts, 3 bolts on the balancer, get the balancer off, 3 bolts on the opti and its all apart.

Not factory, but it was a dealer option. Lots of LT1's w/cooler, I know I have one and it was installed by the dealer.

Loosen the 3 balancer bolts and put the belt back on and turn the car over, that will loosen the balancer.

All you have to do is hit your socket wrench with a dead blow and they loosen up.

Yes, I've never seen a dealer installed oil cooler on an LT1 Vette. Is it similar to the LT1 F-body oil cooler?

My 96 FSM says "Published by NORTH AMERICAN OPERATIONS General Motors Corporation Warren, Michigan 48090". Also that no portion of this book can reproduced, stored in any retrieval system, etc., without prior written permission of General Motors Corporation.

Also, on the front (red) cover there is a seal which has on it "Authentic Technical Information Service" and the GM logo in the center of the seal.

I haven't found any mention of "Helms" anywhere in my two volumes.
