Code 36 is the MAF burn-off relay circuit. Ckeck all the connections very closely and if that doesn't show a poor conection then it is ussualy the relay it-self mounted behind the battery. There are 2 relays there so the trick is figguring out which is bad.

Everthing I've read, including FSM says to replace both relays, MAF burnoff and power relay at the same time...not just one.

No trick. They're $9 each at NAPA and the ones in the car are 22 years old. Change them both and forget about it.

worst case get them from mid america my 86 was throwing multiple codes all related to mass air flow sensor so I bought both relays for &20.00 at mid america and problem fixed. Takes about 5 minutes to change them.

And after you replace them you'll want to disconnect the battery for a few minutes to clear the code.

ACATCHA 22!
Get jumped if say to over replace items. Get jumped if you say not to.
And no-one noticed that i purposely left out saying to replacing any.
So is this ACATCHA33? (or23?)

Yeah, replace both...if one went then chances are the other is soon to follow. My bet would be that the FSM uses that theory to reduce the likely hood of returns...it is cheeper than shop hours, and reduces customer complaints. Only guessing though.

You should probably clear the code and see if it returns before replacing any. If it doesn't then you are done. If it waits a few trips then comes back it is more likely a connection or bad wire problem. It NORMALY will reset on second start after clearing if a relay is bad.
