Default Diagnose my D36...

OK, here's the deal. Somethings not right with my Dana 36. I know that much.

Now, it seems like there's slack there that shouldn't be. From a rolling start, maybe 5-10 mph, when I lay into it, I get this terrible noise. It sounds like a slipping/griding noise, after a few seconds, its gone. It actually kinda sounds like the sound ABS makes, if that makes sense. Same thing from a dead stop on occasion. When I punch it, and know it should be spinning the tires, it makes the same slipping/grinding noise.

I do drag race the car, so I'm not easy on the rear end. Don't use drag radials or slicks, but the car is no stranger to 1.88-1.92 60' times. I want to fix this problem over the winter, now that racing season is done, and the car will be laid up.

I'm thinking half shaft U-Joints or output shaft. But, I'm not as familiar with the rear end as I am with motors. The driveshaft u-joints have been replaced last year -- at least I paid to have them done.

If this is going to be an expensive fix, then I might be better served by going to a D44.

Thanks in advance guys..

Put the car in park or first...then jack the entire rear end up off the ground (don't forget to chalk the front tires) and rotate the rear tires back and forth to see what kind of excessive backlash issues you got going on - if any. Watch the U joints too they could be sloppy. Check your rear hub assemblies for slop as well.....grab the rear tires 12 & 6 o'clock and see how much bump you get. You could also fish some oil out of the differential and check it for metal shavings.
