Hi guys, I have an antenna on my 87 that just runs whether the engine is on or off and the mast stays in the up position. Can anyone tell me if I need a new unit or is it just a broken mast?
First one in 21 years, Ihave only put about 700 miles on it in 10 years. My son will be driving in three months so we are giving it the once over. Alot of repairs I have chevy do but wanted to tackle some stuff ourself. I have read that the mast can be done from the top and I have seen others pull the motor. If I have to pull the motor I figured I may as well get a new unit
It has to be done from the bottom. You can disconnect the antenna relay(under rear hatch trim, beside hatch latch, drivers side), that will stop the running motor untill you fix or replace. http://members.shaw.ca/agent86/Power%20Antenna.pdf
....if the mast does not extend/extract, it wil be either a stripped gear or broken/defective ribbon string/gear that the motor grabs on to....
....there is also an electrical cam that revolves when the antenna extends/retracts and when it hits it's max extension/retraction, the cam shuts motor off and sets it up to go in the other direction....
.... i had a close similar problem but with mine the antenna would stay in one position or the other....disecting the antenna, i found that the surface that the the electrical cam is supposed to ride on was worn.
....so, i slghtly bent the cam to make a better contact on a less worn surface area and it have been working flawlessly for years....
