I purchased an '84 to restore and discovered 3 of the 4 studs on the hood where the hinges mount are broken off. Has anyone had any experience at correcting this situation? Any suggestions appreciated.
I bought a used hood on eBay and found one of the studs was cut off with a die grinder. I drilled out the rest of it and made a backing plate out of 1/2 x 1-1/2 aluminum flat bar. Drilled and tapped for a 6mm x 1.0 pitch x 35mm flange head bolt and just sandwiched the bracket to the hood. The other half of the stud is actually a coarse threaded 10mm bolt. You absolutely need to hold that bolt from turning while drilling it out or the bit will catch and spin the stud out of the hole and punch through the top of the hood. If you can drill away about a half inch of material that should be enough to twist the rest out without damaging the hood. Good Luck
Thanks for your reply. The two studs closest to the front do not appear to have sufficient space behind them to plate. Which one was broken off on the hood you had?
The one closest to the front was ground off. It didn't punch through but left a nice raised spider web on the outside. It happened so fast, even drilling at very slow speeds, there was not enough time to react.
Your hood may be slightly different but I have about an inch and a half from the hood plate to the inside skin. There is about 7/8 inch of bolt and 5/8 inch space behind it. That leaves only 3/8 inch travel from the head of the bolt to the inside of the hood.
As long as you can get a wrench on it to hold it you should be fine. I would start with a smaller pilot bit (1/8) and drill as close to center as possible. Then go with your 1/4 and pray.
