It informs the ECM that you are experiencing pinging. No, you can't hear pinging until it gets more severe. When the KS detects it, your timing is retarded till it goes away. Why do you want to remove it?

Your 92 will have two knock sensors. One on each side, lower middle part of the engine block.

thanks, now i understand! i could of sworn that the other day i was going through a thread and someone said that if you remove the knock sensor, because of its placement on the block, and its lower than the wp, you can drain almost all of the coolant out. Then when you remove the wp you don't have coolant pouring out so close to the opti. Is that right

You'll probably need a screwdriver to poke through the crap collected blocking the holes after you remove the sensors. I covered the wires and starter down there with aluminum foil and used a funnel to minimize the mess on my '91. You'll need a big socket too and it's important to torque them back to spec when reinstalling.

On a 91, the KS is on the lower edge of the block above the oil pan so it is the lowest point and if that is your reason for removal, you are right.

If you reverse-thrust a 3 peak HP or higher Shop Vac, you can BLOW the coolant out instead of draining it. This way, you don't have to remove the knock sensors.

Make sure the engine is running long enough to open the thermostat and turn on your heater.

Next, open your radiator petcock, then slowly remove the radiator cap.

Put the vacuum hose over the radiator opening and let the forced air do the work for you. It gets all the coolant out of the radiator, engine block, and heater core, too!

Work smarter, hot harder, I always say!
