Default Hood Latch Release problem

Whenever I pull the hood release in my '84 and then try to pull the hood up, only one side is released. I have to pull the hood release again to unlatch the other side.

What's causing this?

clean the slide latches attached to the cables and lubricate(latches not the cable) them with silicone spray....hood pins and or rubber hood stops might also be too tight/out of adjustment.

Loosen the black plastic lock nut and turn the inner long black nut inward to pull the latch back a little; then snug up the lock nut.

As a safety precaution use a couple of zip ties (18").

I agree because without the ties, if the cable breaks, you'll be cussin' and fussin' all the while you're trying to pop the hood with a coat hangar or some other tool.

I don't totally agree. Zip ties get brittle over time from the heat under the hood and break easily after a while. Use steel cable instead. This is what I did to my car. These pics aren't good but you get the idea:
