Default hypertech and new injectors

I have a early 86. Only had it for a few weeks. Anyway the dealer told me it has a hypertech chip and accel injectors.
One of the injectors has already quit. I ordered a set of the bosch 3's from Jon. I have a coolant leak at the intake so am replacing those gaskets as the same time as the injectors.
The mechanic at the dealer tells me I will need a new prom if I change out the injectors. Jon at fic says it should be fine unless they have a chip for a car with larger injectors. That would make no sense as the motor is bone stock.
I take it that the hypertech replaces the existing prom chip. If that is so, and I need to change the prom for an original. How do I get an original prom?
thanks

I have an original prom for an 88. Not sure if it's the same. The hypertech should work OK.
Avoid dealers and do the work yourself. It's not hard.

If it is a hyper-tech it is an aftermarket prom/chip. If the new injs. are rated larger (in lbs.) than the stock ones, than it is wise to reprogram and change the inj. constant to match the new lb. rating. If the new inj. are the same size as stock, there shouldn't be a problem, w/either prom....personally, I am not a fan of what hyper-tech (at least the one I looked at) does in the tune.
I have opened/read a hyper-tech in the past but don't remember if I could have re-programmed/burned it. Either way, if you wanted a GM prom I'm not sure if they are still available from a dealer. You might need to call a couple of the used parts guys, vette to vette, dino's etc.

it should be (86-89 uses 165 ecm), but the OP should confirm the ECM number before doing any swaps.

I am not having the dealer do it, but I am having a pro do it. He gave me a good price. If the injectors show up Friday, he is going to do it Saturday. If the hypertech gives me problems, I will take that chip off your hands.
Will keep you posted.
thanks

Do it yourself. It's that easy. Even I did it. Jon will answer any questions for you. Jimbo 89

That chip will not work properly on an 86.
I was able to get a new stock calpak(through AC Delco) from my local parts place, but most posts I see here, the OP never had the same luck I did.
The Hypertech will work as stated. I am running a custom prom using a piggy back adapter on to my Hypertech. I returned the factory calpak as I discovered that the hypertech has a removable prom, so when I'm done with chip burns, I can pop the custom prom into the Hypertech calpak and remove the piggy back.
You could have someone(lots of guys here could do it) burn you a stock tune onto a chip, pop out the hypertech prom and pop in the new one. If I had a spare chip here, I would burn you one.
Pull the Hypertech and check to see if your prom is in sockets.

I am having the gaskets and injectors done tomorrow. I emailed the hypertech people and here is their response.

All our chips are designed around a stock vehicle with stock injectors. After market injectors with a higher flow rate should not be used with our chip. Thanks

So I should be fine.

Have my car back. Did the FIC injectors, changed the oil cooler coolant hoses and the three piece coolant hose, valve cover gaskets and intake gaskets. The original problem was intake leaking coolant.
Anyway, it runs like a new car. Can't believe what a difference it made. Idle rock solid, it even sounds different.
It had a code in it for too rich, that was cleared. That also seemed to have cleared the mileage readout. That is getting back to normal, even though I have only been in stop and go traffice so far.
So no chip issues!

Glad you hear everything seems to be fine at this point.

Not sure if your Hypertech chip for a '86 is the same design as mine ('91), but suspect it is. Mine is a piggy-back design, meaning that the Hypertech "chip" fits into the stock PROM and is simply reinstalled as a unit. Therefore, if you experience a problem and want to try the stock PROM just remove the Hypertech "chip" and reinstall the stock PROM.

I wanted to state the above because I wasn't sure after reading through all the posts that the stock PROM is indeed present assuming of course it is the same design as mine.
