I have a 1985 with a bad heater core. After approximately 5 hours of work, I'm to the point where I can feel, but can't remove the upper screws in the plastic heater core housing. The manual says, "remove the tubular support brace." If that is the brace they are talking about, I see where the brace is bolted on the right, however I'm confused where to unbolt it on the other end. Thanks for the help.
You can see the lower bolt, but you'll have to do the top bolt by feel. The hardest part is getting the plastic cover off that's around the heater core. The last bolt on top by the drivers side is the hardest .I gave up trying to unbolt it and just broke it.Is your heater core leaking?
Agent 86 has posted a photo in the past that made all the difference to me. When you know where the upper bolt is, it isn't hard to remove. I did use a spring 1/4 extension. If you can't find the photo, I'm sure that Agent86 would send it to you. He has to be about the best this list has to offer.
You are using the Fastguy method right? And you have removed the passenger seat I hope.
I'm all for breaking things.. I'm using the fast method (but its going slow). The seat is out. Any pictures would help, however I am new to this site and don't konw how to contact him to request photos.
I asked if your heater core was leaking ,because I wasn't getting much heat out of my heater and thought it was the heater core.It turned out to be the heater control valve in the heater hose under the hood.
That brace has to come right out. If you have the ECM out(it should be), you should be able to see the upper bolt to brace.
Here's a few pics, you will see the brace and bolt in the second pic.
Good Luck
I did mine and received the certificate of the "Bastard Heater Core Replacement." This was back about 6-7 years ago. Take your time if you can, there is absolutely no reason to break anything. Remember when you are re-assembling to put the heater control rod back through the plastic case before you bolt it up, I learned this the hard way.
