Default What's a "frisbee"?

It's probably lingo I haven't heard or on a Mass Air Flow system, but what is the "frisbee" I hear mentioned in several threads?

Its a round metal disc mounted to the front of the water pump pulley. Some leave it on, some remove it.

On the left is the frisbee and on the right is the water pump pulley:

Here it is in the stock configuration - again, the frisbee is on the left, or towards the front of the car and the water pump pulley is immediately to its right, followed by the water pump:

Here it is with the frisbee 'tossed' (putting on the belt is 20X easier BTW). You will have to add some washers under each water pump pulley bolt to compensate for the missing thickness of the frisbee (I measured with a micrometer and the frisbee thickness is exactly the same as a standard zinc grade 5 washer). The water pump pulley is the one with 4 bolts with washers under each one:

Hope that helps,

Jonathan

Thanks for the clarification on that. I know I had that off when I changed my crank pulley, but doesn't that hold the water pump pulley in place? What's the performance benefit if it can be safely removed?

slight weight elimination, other than that no significant perf. gain. I think the frisbee was added for additional harmonic balance of the engine.

Thanks for the illustrations, I had replied to cruisinart before your ills. came through. I must have changed my wp pulley also, it doesn't have lips on either side, like the one in your picts. Thanks a lot for the replies.

What model years had a Frisbee and what year did they finally eliminate them?

Don't know about 91 or earlier, but I'm 100% sure there was no frisbee on my 92 with the LT1. (water pump is driven by camshaft)

Mine is a '91 and was the last year the frisbee was used.

I measured 10chp gain, based on 1/4 mile trap speed increase.

When the A/C compressor was changed in '88 (through '91) the frisbee was added to the WP pulley to dampen out vibration caused by A/C compressor on/off cycling, story on my site.

The introduction of the #113 D-port heads in '88 brought 10chp additional but the frisbee took it away due to the added rotary inertia needed to accelerate the frisbee disc.

So tossing the frisbee realy does bring "free HP" for the late L98s.

Mine became the "anti-theft device" of the bathroom key for the shop where I used to be.

I still remember the looks on people's faces when they would ask to use the bathroom and we would give 'em the frisbee.
"WTF is this thing?!"

I always wondered why the rocker change and D-ports didn't make more of a difference from 85 to 89. I never would have thought the Frisbee would steal that much.

Thanks!
