Default 1988 vette build progress

well i didnt really get to work on my last two corvettes because i bought them as running driving cars and never had any problems with them. i bought this corvette with a blown headgasket so i got it pretty reasonable and im going to be doing all the work myself.

little background on the car, it was originally maroon but someone put a cheap blue paint job on it. i probably wont repaint it i just want to get it mechanically sound. car is from florida previous owner bought it to resell then he popped the headgasket and parked it where it has been sitting since april. car was super rough when i got it, the interior was very dirty. a nutplate on the targa dop was stripped, the digital dash didnt work, radio doesnt work. etc. i bought it this past monday the 15th so heres some of the work i have done to it this week.

pics of when i picked up the car

got it home and started pulling stuff apart

took the wheels off, ive got a nice set of polished boyd codington wheels that will be on it in the next couple of weeks, i have to go pull them off one of my other cars.

interior cleaned up really nice, it is the dark tan which i think is pretty rare, ive never seen it before. it has grown on me alot i really like it.

here are some misc. TPI pieces and serpentine brackets that i paint up. i used a metal flake paint on the runners and valve covers and they turned out pretty nice, i have redone TPI's in the past with ordinary paint and wanted to see what the flake would look like on them. everything else i painted silver.

thanks guys! the paint is in pretty good condition overall but it is flaking off at the edges and stuff. it looks to be a single stage job i worked at polishing a corner of the hood and it came out pretty good so i think im gonna be ok on the paint.

Nice lookin project. I on the other hand had no rest in my azz till I bought the first cheap one I could find and was sorry I did. Now I bought a 88 thats in alot better shape then the 84. So it's either part it out or sell as a whole. My 88 is a pretty high optioned car and will be alot easier to work on. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PROJECT. Looks like your allready 3/4 of the way there. Pipe

details as in plans for the car?

well my main goal is to just get the car back on the road so i can drive it everyday, i was wanting to put a camshaft and headers on it while ive got it all tore down but i have bought a couple extra sets of wheels so im going to skimp on the performance stuff a little bit. so ill be throwing it all back together with some fresh painted parts and it will be basically stock. i went a little overboard with wheels for this car, i decided i wanted a set of c5 magnesium wheels so i bought a set of those and i have tires for them already. and i ordered brand new center caps for them. i also have the stock 88 wheels, as well as a set of 89 17's i bought locally. i also have a nice set of boyd codington wheels off my other camaro. so i have 4 very nice sets of wheels for the car. i ordered the lowering kit for it the other day as well.

ill keep updating this with pictures of the progress

Well sell a couple of those sets of wheels so you can buy a cam/headers!!

Out of curiousity, how do you know the paint you used for the runners/plenum will hold up to engine heat? What type of paint did you use?

BTW: Nice sticker on the back of your trailer!

its a 67 but nice eye. it is for sale the majority of it is done, just needs to be put together.

GREGGPENN:

we'll find out if the paint holds up! i painted the runners and valve covers on my iroc (tpi) with plain old automotive paint and its held up fine. id like to at least get a set of headers but im waiting to hear from the machine shop if the heads are cracked. the head gaskets looked ok when i pulled them so idk. if the heads are cracked my $$ will go into a new set of heads not headers... lol

thanks for the comments on the sticker, i like it too!

i havent updated in a while been busy with other stuff. i havent really worked on the vette i did get the heads off but thats about it. heres some pics. btw what is that plate on the front of the water pump? ive never seen this before?

but these came in today! i am going to have to refinish them because three of them didnt match the original one i bought. i got the three off a forum member on here. im happy with them but didnt know they were repainted. so i have to redo them. it sucks stripping down a set of wheels that cost so much $... what color do you guys think i should do them? i ordered some bronze wheel paint but im kinda thinking about painting them silver also just dont know how it would look.

heres the one with the original finish.

this is what the ones look like that i bought.

i prepped one, im gonna go over it with 1000 grit then paint and clear.

Michael, That's quite a project you've got going on. I wish that I had the know-how to do something like that. You've definitely got to send me some pics of that Camaro when it is complete. I hope that the wheels work out ok for you.

thanks man. i get kinda overwhelmed with projects and jump around from project to project so i dont ever get much done. i hit this vette pretty hard in the begininning getting it all tore apart. but ive got 6 cars so im always doing something. ive got a 95 camaro 6-speed im getting ready to sell and i had to put a power window motor in that... talk about a pain in the rear, i dont want to do one of those again. once i get the 95 finished up its back onto the vette. i actually sold the camaro the other day for $10K. the guy is supposed to be seding me a down payment so we'll see how that goes. oh btw if you have those magnessium stickers that would help me out a TON!

The wheels look fantastic. Can I have them back now?!

I can't find the stickers anywhere. I'm going to send the guy that I got the car off of a PM to see where he got them.
