Default Code 46 and No Crank - '88

Was trying to install a second turn signal flasher under the IP, which messed up the system. Now, I get a Code 46 and no crank. It's an '88.

Reason for the 2nd flasher attempt: to hear the turn signal over engine and road noise. Couldn't easily get to the factory flasher unit to move it near the driver so I could hear it, so tried with a 2nd flasher unit. Fail. Spliced it into the purple wire coming out of the steering column (12 v. when turn signal activated, 0 v. otherwise. Tried in parallel to ground (nothing) and then in series (worked but slower flashing).

Radio and Courtesy Lights work.

1. The FSM says to first check fuses and a circuit breaker.
The Theft fuse in the panel is OK.
How do you check the Pwr Acc circuit breaker there?

2. Then it says to check the Theft fuse in "the fuse holder that's part of the IP harness." Where is that fuse holder and what does it look like? I look under the IP panel (wiring from steering column, etc.) but don't see it there.

Thanks for your help. It's summer here and I'd like to be out there cruisin'

give me minute to research it, but in the meantime you may try pulling the theft fuse out for a minute or two. maybe even the battery ground to reset everything incase you tripped it.

There ya go!

SPLICE NUMBER 221

I/P Harn, behind Center I/P approx 11.5 cm right of Data Link Conn (DLC) breakout

That's the breakout not the connector itself. So where the wires for the connector splice out of the next larger harness(loom)

Thanks for that! Will get to it and trust to find it. First, I left the battery disconnected overnight to see if it'll reset itself.

Still no go after battery disconnected overnight.
All circuit breakers in the fuse panel AOK.
Saw in a drawing in the FSM that the IP harness fuse holder is near the hazard flasher. Trying to judge where that is by the wimpy sounds that flasher makes. So, what IP panels do I need to remove to get at it? I'm thinking the IP Lower Trim Pad L.H. as in Figure 8C-15?

Will have to do it tomorrow since I leave for work now, having lost another beautiful sunny warm day of roadster cruisin'. I'll check for replies at work.

Cheers

Yep, I would say the lower panel would have to come out and at that there is some serious yoga in your future. Take your hand and follow the wires coming out of the back of your ALDL connector, when it runs into another loom your close. It will be within 11.5cm of there. It may be inside of that larger loom, and may be a fusible link(small black cylinder) built into the wire.

That's very helpful. We'll see how it goes tomorrow and if I need to bend up into a pretzel (or is that what Bend it Like Beckham means?)

Cheers,

That was not accessible from underneath the steering wheel. Took off the center instrument panel and found it there right next to the hazard flasher as shown in FSM 8A-201-7 Figure A. All the fuses were AOK, so now I'm stuck. Will call in an auto electrician tomorrow, hoping they're willing to come to the car and hoping they know about these types of systems (mostly late model Japanese imports around here).

I would be checking the 2 VATS wires and connector, that go up the steering column to ignition switch. Someone may have been messing with the wiring, in that area.
