I did a search and nothing about where to put the cats came up. I just installed headers and will be doing a 3" duel setup with high flow cats and an x-pipe. Where is the best place for the cats and x-pipe? Some say the cats go close to the engine and some say the x-pipe does... I also found a thread where the hot cats caused the floor to melt. Also, some have said the x-pipe goes up front to give the exhaust more room to flow, others have said it goes in the back to help balance the flow. Where does everything effectively go??
On a stock exaust "main cat" is installed after the Y pipe merges together...so they can get away with using 1 big cat. I would think that the cat/s would work no matter where you put them in the system but it might be less efficient/effective the further the distance away is from the exaust ports due do to the effects of heat loss.
I have a 6 speed so there is room next to the trans right after the header collector. If I put the cats here will they be too hot for the floor? I dont want a fire.
What is the benefit of having the x-pipe back there?

As long as the distances from the floor pans are the same as the stock pre-cats you should be OK. The main cat performs some of the same function as a X-pipe and that is where the GM engineers put it.
