I have a '93 6 speed. I haven't had it out for a few weekends since the weather has been terrible. Anyway, the shift into first has always been a bit rough (I've had the car for 10 months.)
Today I felt like I was really pushing the shifter hard to get it in gear. I finally resorted to starting out in 2nd. It was easier as I went up in gears. First gear was actually grinding when I tried to shift.
Are you sure your clutch is disengaging fully, also I wonder if bleeding the slave cylinder would help? What is the age/condition/level of the tranny fluid?
Its normally pretty stiff for me and I have a new clutch. If you can't get it in, put it in neutral let off the clutch, then try to put it in again. That's what works for me.
If you can get the tranny into reverse with no problems but have grinding only in first, most likely it is the 1st gear synchros that are shot. If it grinds in first and reverse, possible a clutch issue.
Your Clutch master cylinder may be on it's way out.
I was amazed at how well my clutch worked after swapping mine. I thought the only trouble I was having was that the MC was leaking the fluid. Little did I know that it's performance was cr@p as well.
Swapped it out and smooth shifting.
Of course, I had issue like this before and it wound up being the clutch itself.......I'd look at normal wear items prior to juimping the shark with bad synchros.

Also, what color was your tranny fluid? Burned smell?
