Default 2 piece vs 1 piece rear main seal pans

What a quick way of telling whether a pan's for a 1 piece or a 2 piece rear main seal?

A friend of mine has a old dry sump pan and I want to see if it will fit.

If you have a LT1(like mine) it is a 2 piece and I believe most L98's are the same.

I've got a one piece, I replaced it last time I did my clutch.

Something I recommend to everyone

Brian, the pan for a one-piece has a larger diameter rear gasket area (the semi-circle area). Unfortunately the easiest way to tell the difference is to have them side-by side or at least have a pic of the one you need handy.

There are VERY FEW one-piece rear dry sump pans out there. Canton and Hamburgers (mine is a hamburgers) are the only ones I've found (there may be others). Most racers use either new LS1 stuff or the older 2-piece cranks.

If you need, I can measure the rear of my stock one -- it's just sitting in the garage. Let me know.

Brian, here's the pan I have on mine. I just welded in an additional pickup. The pics in this ad may help you.

2-piece driver side oil pan

1.720" deep from the block mount surface to the main seal OD radius,
4.375" across, left to right, horizontal

Slightly less accurate measurements since I used a ruler :o

1 piece seal pan (stock 1996 pan):
2.25" deep from the rails to the seal OD
5.25" wide across at the seal

So it's a pretty significant difference.

Good info, I have always wondered myself about the size differences, it looks like the 1-piece is obviously larger in both directions
