IIRC, it's a 17mm hex key, same as the transmission plugs. I'm planning on doing mine soon, so I'll be sure to keep track of this thread to see if I'm right.

Rear end is actually smaller hex I want to say 10mm. Mines in the air so I can verify this in the morning, but I'm sure someone will beat me to it before then.

A fellow on another forum (Bogus) suggested to use a pipe wrench. It worked great for me.

I want to say mine is a 3/8" or 10mm allen. I know it is not as big as the transmission.

After you strip out the inner hex, use a pipe wrench or vice grips. Works well and you can just keep reusing the ugly plug!

How often should the differential fluid be changed? How much fluid does it hold? Do you need to siphon it out to get it all? What would a quality replacement fluid be? Maybe I should do mine this spring as well(1992 ; 89K).

I believe it does have to be siphoned out. From what I understand, using the exact correct oil with any required additives is upmost important.

I have never changed differential fluid in any of my cars. Corvettes have had: 130,xxx miles, 110,xxx, Jeep had 200,xxx, Explorer had 210,xxx miles. Never changed the transmission fluid or Differential fluid. Everything stays changed in this Corvette though. Oh yes, the Accord has 35,xxx miles on it.

IIRC, GM has a special differential fluid and additive that goes in it.

Vice grips are my choice on most jobs. Smaller and easier to handle than a large pipe wrench.

GM says it doesnt have to be changed. I race mine so I change it every couple years or so. This year I am trying Amsoil in the rear. Amsoil claims to have the limited slip additives in it so we'll see. Otherwise you have to buy a little 4oz bottle of additive from a dealer.

I did not siphon mine out the first time. I drilled a 7/16" hole in the bottom just to the side of the bottom bolt. I then tapped it with a 1/4-18 NPT pipe tap and pluged it. Now it all just drains out and then I refill. Takes 15 min. tops.

Drilling a hole is a great idea. I remember a while back someone posted pictures of the procedure.

Was it this one?

This is not my diff but the hole I put in mine is right where this guy put his. I went with the recessed allen plug right off the bat. The square head will definitely not clear the exhaust.

Dear CAJUN C4,

toptechx6 has just replied to a thread you have subscribed to entitled - Rear End Drain Plug Pictures? - in the C4 Technical and Performance forum of Corvette Action Center.

This thread is located at:

Here is the message that has just been posted:

You need a 5/16” drill bit, a 1/8 X 27 pipe tap and a plug the same size. Center punch a spot 1/2 inch left of the lowest bolt centerline and 1/2 inch forward of the batwing cover. Use care when drilling to avoid nicking the ring gear, a depth "stop" on your drill at about 1 inch will work. (Slide a length of rubber tubing on the drill bit cut to the correct length.)
If you are installing the drain plug with the differential in the car it helps to have a long 5/16” drill bit, use a ¼ drive 12 point socket with extension to turn the tap. The draining lubricant will remove any chips.

I've been tempted to put a drain plug in mine but it wouldn't help me fill it back up so I haven't. I pump out the old, switch the line into the new, and fill it back up.
