Wish I had done the drill and plug thing when I had mine out to replace the axle. Put in all new seals and refilled mine with Mobil1 gear lube and the tube of posi stuff. Had less than 50k miles on it so I should be good for at least another 50k. Pulling everything out gave me a chance to really clean it, but I don't want to have to do that again, so the drill & plug thing looks like the way to do it right next time. Thanks for the pictures. It really shows how it would look inside when done correctly.
I don't know why they don't put drain plugs on axles. I guess they think nobody will drive them that far or that hard.

I actually did my drain plug with it on the car. After I drilled and tapped the hole I ran some regular 10W 30 motor oil through to clean any shaving that were in there, then I washed that out with a little bit of the gear oil I was going to use. When I felt it was clean enough I put the plug in and filled it with oil.
