I put a spec clutch in my 1985 vette and when I put the new clutch in I got in the car and started pumping the clutch I pumped it about four times and then it made a loud pop noise. Now the clutch wont disengage. I can see the slave cylinder moving the shift fork but it isn't enough to disengage the clutch what is goin on?
Also I checked the shift fork and it is on the throw out bearing like it should be. I know this because i looked through the hole in the bell housing that the shift fork is coming out of.
I got the clutch to work by using a longer rod. The one that pushes against the shift fork. The clutch works fine but it wants to slip a little bit like its not fully engaged. What is up with this?
It's a stud with a ball shaped end. The fork pivots on the ball stud. There is a bowl shaped recess on fork where the ball stud is supposed to be positioned. If the fork slides off the ball, you will get some funky geometry, causing clutch problems.
You can't remove it with trans in, but you can see it. Pull the fork boot of bell and look inside. It might take a mirror and a flash light to get a good look to see if clip fingers on fork are positioned behind ball and that the ball is in the forks bowl shaped recess.
I was able to pull on fork to get it back into postion.
Just wondering if yours is working correctly now. I replaced the clutch on my 85 4/3 this weekend and put it all together, but i am having a similar problem. The clutch appears to be working correctly - fork is positioned properly on the ball stud and around the throwout bearing - but I still can't shift into most gears and car remains in gear even with clutch fully deployed. I'm wondering if I need to adjust the shifter linkage?
