Default Passive Lock System ***

Don't know what else to try ??? I've tried re-programming the FOBS , new battery in them , and still won't function . I've also noticed that when doors are locked , I have to keep pushing the manual lock button Mant times to Unlock the Pass. door ? Not sure why door(s) don't Unlock with just one push of the button ? Anyone have solution ? Anyone in area that might be knowledgable and able to help get the System back working properly ?

Default Sleeping PKE

Your PKE system may be in sleep mode. To wake it, while close to or in the car, press and HOLD the door button for about 8-10 seconds. After 2 or 3 seconds, the locks will twitch but you must keep holding the door button until the locks cycle FULLY and end up unlocked.
If you follow this procedure with the key in the ignition, the system will switch between one and two door operation. When the system is in one door operation (the driver's door), you may open the passenger door by momentarily pressing the door button. The door button does not open both doors.
Hope this helps
PS When my cell phone is in my pocket, the PKE is severely distance limited. When the cell phone is in the car on charge, the PKE is totally dead.

My first question would be does the PKE lamp light when the key is first turned to the on position. This is a self test indication and if it does not happen it would indicate the PKE receiver is defective providing it is not in the sleep mode.

You said you tried to re-program. How far did you get? Did the PKE light illuminate at all as it should going in the programming mode. If it did not, then this would indicate the PKE receiver is bad and not the FOB.

The electronic locks circuitry goes thru the PKE receiver in the dash. If the PKE goes bad it is possible it could effect operation of the door locks. I assume you are pushing the electronic button and not the manual slide lever. Even in the sleep mode the electronic buttons should work correctly. This would be another indication the PKE receiver is defective.

You could check the 2 fuses associated with PKE operation which would be the PKE fuse and the radio fuse. Its doubtful they are defective.

Depending on your results and my suggestions, if you have the worst of the worst symptoms as I indicated it is most likely the PKE receiver is defective. Wiring, lack of power, grounds, antennas or key switches are low probability of causes of the problem. The PKE receivers do frequently go bad which probably is the problem. The receiver is inside the center of the dash and takes about a day to get in and out.

allstarcmdr,

There are a couple of other possible explanations.

1. the door switches (in jam, pop out when door is openned) are sticking or have failed electrically. Whenever the door switches do not report the correct 'status' to the CCM (central control module), which can adversly effect the PKE system and its ability to arm and disarm and unlock the doors. Check the switches to assure they are working correctly (i.e. does the 'door ajar' light on the dash go on when the door is openned and does the radio go off when the door is openned -- both assuming the key was on, then turned off and removed). If the door switches turn out to be bad, they can be replaced right through their hole, without needing to take the whole door apart.

2. the remotes (FOBs) have a small ball bearing within a metal housing. This ball bearing detects motion and makes contact with small metal strips inside the metal housing. The purpose of the ball-bearing is to 'wake-up' the FOB when it is in motion, and when not in motion for a period of time, it goes to 'sleep'. If the ball-bearing becomes dirty from just age (happened to both of ours from our 94), it will either not move (FOB never wakes-up) or wake-up once and a while or after excessive movement (e.g. your need to press the button many times).
The metal housing can be removed (Very gently) and the inside cleaned (with an electrical spray contact cleaner) and the ball bearing cleaned with a bit of water and a paper towel -- remember its electrical and it should not be oily, so use care in what cleaning agents you choose.
