Thanks Brian! Me to. I will keep you posted with the results. I will be starting the installs next week, might take some pics to post. Biggest thing that worrys me is getting those valve spings off and on without dropping a valve. I really do not want to pull the heads off.

At first I was also worried about that. I was able to grab the top of the valve with my fingers after removing the spring before it would have a chance to fall. I then moved it gently down then up to verify the piston was at TDC. I heard a slight tap when it touched the piston.
Crank dot at 12 o'clock cylinders 1 and 6 at TDC
Crank dot at 3 o'clock cylinders 8 and 5 at TDC
Crank dot at 6 o'clock cylinders 4 and 7 at TDC
Crank dot at 9 o'clock cylinders 3 and 2 at TDC
The crank gear makes two rotations for every one rotation of the cam gear. Here's a graphic for the individual piston TDC positions.
After getting wooped by a 2007 Mercedes Benz SLK 55 AMG last week I decided to take a road trip to TPIS.
First off I would like to say that these guys are top notch. I dealt with Jim Hall, he was very knowledgable and never made me feel like I was asking to many questions. So a big thumbs up for TPIS
OK, so here is what I ended up getting...
JetHot coated 1-3/4 LT headers
ZZ-409 Roller Cam
Isky valve springs
52mm Throttle Body
Along with the above parts from TPIS I have recently installed the following...
1.6 Comp Cams Pro Magnum roller rockers
Dana 44 with 3.55 gears
9.5" 3000 stall converter from Kane
The PCM is being retuned by PCM4Less for all the new parts.
I am hoping to run some deep 12 sec. times with this full setup and a set of Drag Radials (Hoosier 315's)
I ran a best time of 13.6 @ 102 with a stock converter, 3.07 gears and Goodyear GS-D3's
I would like your thoughts on what this combo should be doing in the 1/4 mile. Jim at TPIS said I should be in the 400 hp range at the crank.
Needless to say I can't wait till the track opens next month, I hope that Benz is there!!!
from my knowledge, dana 44 is an axle. how come you installed that on a corvette?
I can't believe this thread. To the folks that are new and have only dealt with tpis once, consider yourself lucky and try not to do it again. Read what the professionals on this site are saying and not the newbies ...
Based on the majority of feedback, it appears that the folks at tpis could care less about us and our orders. If they can fulfill the order and make money without too much effort they will, but if anything is out of the norm, they won't even call you back.
I had a horrible experience of having ordered large tube runners then waiting for 4 months before I called again only to be told there was no record of the order. That jim guy originally took the order and was the one later telling me there was no order. He even forgot I said things like "nice talking with you ..."
While waiting for tpis, 2 sets of large runners came and went on flea bay and like a dummy I thought, wait for new ones ... :-) I ended up buying a set of accel large runners a year later and postponed the porting/polishing project.
in my world, I stay away from them and steer people away from their products. Nothing they make is worth the hit and miss approach they take and I already have enough uncertainty in my life.
(to the poster above me ... FYI. All manual trans early vettes CAME with a dana 44 from the factory. )
Yep, gotta watch yourselves. I ordered the L-98 cold air kit. They sent me a used one, definitely off of another car. It had chips out of it, cracks in it - I have the pics still. When I called to tell them about it, and I was very polite, Jim said he would "check my sales history" and get back to me. Check my sales history? For what? To see if I sent something back so they can use that to make me keep their less than expected product? It shouldn't matter. When I used my reciepts to check my sales history with them, It was a almost $1,100. With no returns except for that. Of course, I had to hound them to get my refund. And they never did ante up and admit they tried to jam me. Good luck on your build - you'll get the results you want, but no miniram for me now.....
If you have any concerns , jam 3ft of 1/4 rope in the through the plug hole and wind the piston up so it holds the valves in place.
I started to try this for extra insurance. On my first cylinder I started to put the rope in. Not much went in. It was because I was at TDC and the piston was all the way up where it should be. I threw the rope aside and used the TDC method from then on. I could feel that the valve could not fall by moving it up and down with the piston at TDC so I knew I was good.
I guess maybe people use the rope if they arent turning the crank to find TDC. I think I'd be more concerned with the valve falling using this method. Whatever works though.
