Just a note now that this 'project' is finally finished. I finally got some time to pull the door panel off and install a new door ajar switch. Inside I found a powered orange wire and white ground wire that were worn to copper; certainly shorting out something. Retaped the bare wires, installed the door ajar switch, and pulled out-cleaned-reinstalled the dome light switches with some new boots--everything working like new! Thanks for everyones input on this PITA annoyance. Now I can get a new battery without worrying that it will just get killed with a bad ground somewhere!!!
I'm sorry you went through all the trouble to pull the door panels off.
I guess you didn't see the instructions from the FSM someone posted earlier in the thread on how to remove the door ajar switches without removing the panels?

Anyhow, I'm glad you got it all fixed.
Well, I never would have found the bare wires without the door panel off, and it wasn't a big deal to take it off anyway; they are both shot so I don't have to be real careful. They are next to go!
On my 89, I had the battery unplugged. I open the driver door, and there is a beeping at the passenger dash area I believe. How is there a beeping with the battery unplugged? It is the same beeping sound when you have the driver door open, but it isn't as loud.
CRAAAAAPPP!!!! Ok, got that out...premature celebration. Started up the car last night when I got home. Turned it off while sitting in the car, 30 seconds later the interior lights come on without even opening the doors! And now they wont go off. I had to pull the fuse again. Now I know that it really is the delay timer anyway, and it seems to be working backwards. I want to just pull it out and wire it up so the lights go off when I close the doors. I really dont know why Chevy does this, but I have a delay timer in my van too, and I hate it. I can never be sure that it is just the timer, or if the kids left a light on! I have to stand there and watch the stupid lights to make sure they go off. Anyway, I tried to find the delay timer, and you are all right that said it is hard to find, because I cant find it. I have the RH hush panel off, and there is a ton of spaghetti under there but I cant locate anything specific. Can someone let me know exactly where I should look, what it looks like, and how to wire it so that it will work like an open/close switch? Thanks everyone!
You guys are confusing me. The door ajar switch is on the rear of the door. It is for the "door ajar" indicator in the drivers information center.
The dome LIGHT switch is on the hinge pillar between the hinges. It is not the same part as pictured earlier in the thread. It can be removed with a 10mm deep socket. The wires attached to it will twist up as you remove it. pre-wind the wires before re-installation so they are 'straight' after installation.
I just re-read the problem symptoms. It is the LH dome light switch (hinge pillar) causing the problem. The switch body probably isn't making a good ground. The dome-light timer is being influenced by a resistive connection at the switch. The LH switch has multiple contacts. One is for the key buzzer (tan), one for alarm(blue), and dome lights (yellow). With key in, the buzzer is grounded at the dome-light switch. Something is corroded, and the power from the key buzzer is not being grounded, but holds the dome light circuit 'high' and the timer still thinks the door is closed.
Remove the LH pillar switch. I think you'll find it's corroded.

Hey guys, sorry to bring this one back but I've done some searching around on the site & I believe the above quote may be part of the issue were trying to solve. The car is my dads 93 (so I don't have much experience with these cars) but he's thinking about selling it to step up to a C6, so nows the time we need to fix all the small issues he's lived with for the past 8 or so years
The interior lights & door buzzer origionally worked fine & then eventually the buzzer started to sound like it was dying, then eventually died & the interior lights stayed on. He wasn't a fan of the buzzer so he just removed the interior bulbs & thats how the car has been. We figured the buzzer & lights were probably related & the dying buzzer sound came from the passenger side. Looks like its probably part of the interior light timing module found under the glove compartment. We were just going to replace this but after reading the above quote, we think there may be an issue with the interior light switch.
So I wanted to check out the switch but I couldn't locate it, so was wondering if anyone could help me out? I spotted the door ajar switch no problem but I didn't see any switch on the hinge pillar at the front of the door? (must not be looking it the correct spot). He doesn't have any factory service manuals, so I'm abit lost here, as I mentioned I don't have the experience with this car as I do my own, thanks.
not sure about the 93, but in my 86 they are pretty obvious. If you cant see a pin sticking out through a small rubber boot between the hinges, then there isn't one on the 93. The door ajar switch is on the door, and the dome light switch is on the pillar between the hinges. BTW, still dont have mine fixed either, I know its a bad delay timer module, but I havent disassembled the dash to get it out yet.
Maybe there isn't one on the 93 then, I mainly looked on the hinge pillar but also quickly checked the door & didn't see anything. I know what typical door switches look like & didn't see anything, between the hinges on th 93 there is just one large rubber boot for all the wires running to the door. There was no switch that I could see in that area?
If there is no additional switch in the 93, is everything controlled off the "door ajar" switches?
Replacing both door ajar switches solved all my interior lighting issues. I don't remember seeing on my 95 the other switch mentioned. I can check this evening.
My interior lights where staying on too.It was the drivers side doorlock. If the key wasnt pulled out at the 12:00 position or if it was a little off,the lights would stay on.Baffled the previous owner also.
