Somebody make me smart here. On my 85 there is a connector near the battery that when disconnected clears codes only. Doesn't mess with radio presets or more important BLM settings. If you disconnect the negative battery cable everything goes back to to zero. Is the 85 the only year with this or is this something a previous owner put in?
So I would assume from the description that is something the PO put in
Can't get my head around this, disconnecting power to ECM clears everything and I have never heard of this mod on the tuning Forums.
There is nothing on the schematic that indicates a path to the codes only, ECM has volatile memory only , no power ; no memory.
Custom hack and wiring job by some wizz kid?
I seem to remember something about a connection kit that can be installed between the battery and the radio that trickles enough juice to keep the pre-sets from clearing so when you disconnect the battery to work on the car you don't lose the pre-sets. I think you can find it in Ekler's or Mid America's catalog if I remember right.
I got one of them on my '87;
always wondered what if was for as it didn't disconnect anything ; the wires just come out and out of the loom.
Have never seen it mentioned in any posts over 10 years; std answer on how to clear codes has always been , disconnect the battery.
Time to go back and read FSM cover to cover
