[Quote] yeah, I'm very interested to see how I'm going to do with just the 3 angle valve job. I'm sure porting the heads and putting bigger valves on makes a difference, but for what I use the car for (mostly daily driving), it was just WAY too expensive to have a lot of head work done. I used the $ I made selling my old crank&rods to pay for the 3 angle valve job, and I'm glad that I did have it done.[Quote]

I've been reading everything I can find about porting LT1 heads. Quite a lot of porters say that bigger valves don't add a whole lot for N/A 350-383 with relatively mild cams and moderate lift.

They also stop short of actually saying, but imply that very little other work is required (all of which can be done by the average motorhead). This is supposed to be worth +30 on the flow.

Back cutting the valves seems to be a big gain for the buck too.

The high dollar work seems to result in gains at the high end that require a cam that works well at 5,000-6,500 rpm (or higher).

Well, your results will help me decide what I'm going to do. If it all seems good, I'm going to skip the $2,000 heads when I put the hot cam in. I bought some take off heads for $100. Allowing another $300 for studs and valve work and $40 (plus 15 hours time) for cleanup I hope to get 80% of the performance of the $2000 heads for a net (after selling my stock heads) of around $200. I am hoping to improve the flow an average of 10% in the .2 to .4 range.

Obviously, I wouldn't try this at home if I was looking for a high revving, max output engine, but I'm thinking these heads will work pretty good with a hot cam with minor mods.

Sweet man. Where did you set your idle, and how does it compare vs. mine. I know you've got the same mufflers, I wanna hear it. I'm interested in the dyno numbers more or less just to see how the Hot Cam works in a 383.

Sounds, we need sounds ;) Or you could just drive it up here to BG in May ;).

I'd be honored to run you in the quarter  I'm sure you'd win but at least it would be some kind of nice music listening to the both rumble down the track.
I have my hot idle temp at 700rpm (in gear), and 775 in neutral/park. I need to raise the in gear idle.. because it tends to be lower than target idle (because of the cam). It's idling around 650-675. I probably need to have it around 725-750. I want it to idle ok, but I want to hear that cam ;)

I'm trying to see if I can come up for the cruise-in .. the 24th of may is my 21st birthday, and I have a feeling all my buddies are going to want to take me out. And I'll be doing about 9 hours of summer school this summer, and that will be M-F eliminating the 22nd and 23rd.

FINALLY! Great news bud! I knew we all were going to see this daily soap opera end happily ever after. Mind if I ask where you are going to set your rev limiter? What is your stock rev limit setting? I understand 12 WOT blasts is good to break in the rings.

I set the rev limiter at 6k. Stock i believe is 5750 (????) I don't think that my curve will keep going up too much past 6k anyway.

Hehe.. 12 WOT blasts would work :D

Good to hear you got it going. So how much power do you think it's putting to the wheels?

Glad to hear you got it running Curtis. Might have to give you a ring one of these times that I am down. I take it you didn't get all the ice in Norman like in OKC. No tree branches in the driveway? I bet stepping on the gas pedal makes you forget about the problems you had. Well most of them anyway :D
Talk to you later----Rob

yeah, very little ice. Just a couple patches this morning from frozen puddles. No trees on the lot of the house we're renting, so no worry there ... not even any bushes lol! Course rent for me is $220 a month, oh well .. i could care less what the yard looks like hehe.

My guess (and a big one at that), is around 400tq and 360-375hp (both at the rear)

yep, very tempting to floor it. I'm trying to hold myself back. I put 30 miles on it today (running local errands). I think tomorrow I'll drive into the city and try to get like 50 or so miles on her. Hopefully I'll have 300-500 miles on it in no time.

Nobody said you had to have a REASON to drive it. You're breaking in a new motor, trying to see if there are any problems, isn't that reason enough?
