I just got done driving around for about an hour! :D :D :D (after the rebuild for those of you that have been living in a closet the past 2 months)
The only two things I've noticed that I need to fix are :
1) a stupid rattle coming from my driver's side cat or exhaust piping (possibly a bolt in the cat???  .. or the insides coming apart) I stopped by an exhaust shop and put it up on a lift and it was definitely coming from between the front of the cat to where the pipe turns towards the middle of the car.
2) i'm running pretty lean. Lterm is around 140 lowest I saw was 130 Sterm was between 126 and 134 (a little lean there too).
And on a GOOD note :
I'm keeping the rpm's below 3500 for a little while, but of course I had to go up to 3500 to see how she's running. WELL.. i must say, i'm very pleased with the rebuild (so far). This thing has sooo much torque that ASR wouldn't let me drive at all ;) .. i turned it off and i could hear the tires spinning most of the way up to 3500 :yesnod: :yesnod: :D Felt the car going sideways a lot too :D :D
congratulations. glad to hear that the beast is up and running.
by the way, how does the car idle ? is it choppy with the lt4 hotcam ?
i am thinking of updating my 383 to the lt4 hotcam ( currently have the stock lt4 cam), and i am trying to get some feedback on how the hotcam behaves in a stroker.
Make sure it is notthe heat sheild causing the noise. Also could be an exhaust leak. If you think there may be a bolt in there, remove the front O2 sensor and try using a magnetic wand to retreive whatever it may be.
Glad to hear its running.
I could be wrong, but aren't high BLM's indicative of running rich?
Thanks Jeff. I am having a similar problem as Curtis, but I found an exhaust leak which may account for a lot of it. I need to do some scans of my own.
Sounds great!! I really can't wait to see a dyno run - that might take some of the vodoo out of these high dollar head porting jobs.
We have a lot of dynos for engines similar to yours that have the hi dollar head work, but I don't know of any with just a 3 angle valve job with back cut.
Once you get the tune right, I'm betting your numbers will be very close to the hot cam cars with the full head work (and the power will be in an area that you can use it).
P.S. You need to apply for some credits in Project Management :D

You definitley have to have a computer reprogram for the hot cam in a 383. Without the programming, it REALLY bogs down in gear at a light. Now that I have brought the idle up, it has helped a LOT. I wanted to keep the cam noticeable, so I didn't take it up too high.

Haha.. no kidding! This has definitely been one heck of a project! I wish there were auto mechanic classes her at OU, cuz that could help get rid of all these electives I have left over. I should definitely be getting some credit for Project Management hehe.
yeah, I'm very interested to see how I'm going to do with just the 3 angle valve job. I'm sure porting the heads and putting bigger valves on makes a difference, but for what I use the car for (mostly daily driving), it was just WAY too expensive to have a lot of head work done. I used the $ I made selling my old crank&rods to pay for the 3 angle valve job, and I'm glad that I did have it done.
So far I think I'm going to be OK with the 11.55:1 compression. I have 92 octane in the tank right now, and I haven't heard any pinging at all.
My temperatures have stayed under 200 after putting the 160* t-stat in and programming the fans to come on at 194. and off at 186 (i think .. tuner cat does everything in Celcius  ).
Enjoy! Get that battery all charged up and then start programming!
hehe.. yeah the battery is all nice and charged now. The next thing I'm going to have to do with the programming is try and adjust the AF mixture to try and get BLM's closer to 128 on the Lterm
Sweet man. Where did you set your idle, and how does it compare vs. mine. I know you've got the same mufflers, I wanna hear it. I'm interested in the dyno numbers more or less just to see how the Hot Cam works in a 383.
Sounds, we need sounds ;) Or you could just drive it up here to BG in May ;).
I'd be honored to run you in the quarter  I'm sure you'd win but at least it would be some kind of nice music listening to the both rumble down the track.
