Default Eng revving, stalling problem with '95 SOLVED

If anyone remembers, I had a problem in which the engine would begin to cut-out and rev-up all on it's own and then after a few more minutes...stalling and unable to re-start until it cooled down.

I replaced the ignition coil, then the ignition module, then the OptiSpark. Decided it was the ECM; sent it out for repair THREE times over a four month period....always came back with No Problem Found.

I finally just bought another ECM from GM, had it flashed and all is good with the car.

Now I just need to get a refund from Auto Computer Exchange in Davie, FL. I DO NOT recommend any business with this company. I told them each time, the unit fails when HOT.

Anyways.....nice to have a reliable car once again.

EDIT: "See post #9 for additional information"

ECM/PCM was the culprit
Glad to hear you got fixed! Getting stranded out in Arizona out in the sun is no fun.

New one.....not available....only remans. Price runs between $90 to $120 plus core charge.

The old one works fine....as long as the weather is cool. Would be fine for someone anyone where the air temp stays below 60F.

As this is my daughter's car....the '95...she came over and took it last night, so I do not know if I am going to get much "seat time" anymore now that it's fixed.

My friend has the exact same problem as you described with his 89. I just got off the phone with him telling him your story. Replacement module at Advance Auto Parts is $77, going to the store now...

A 1989 PCM is totally different from a 1995 ECM so this may not be your friend's solution..but who knows???

Let us know how it goes.

Default Additional information

I talked to Auto Computer Exchange about getting a refund as I had sent the ECM in three times and it was never fixed. However in the conversation I had with Robby he mentioned that the knock module is removed during testing as that is the access port.

One of the error codes I got once was an EPROM fault...which is what the knock module is..an EPROM. Now it has me wondering if it is the knock module itself; although I have the old module installed into the replacement ECM and have had no problems. Think I may take the knock module out of my 96 LT4, install it into the old ECM and see if it still fails. I have been told I can do this witout reflashing the ECM....

Comments??

I know nothing about the 89 but the symptoms are very similar. After it gets hot, it runs rough and then stalls. Can't start it again until it cools down. Does the module still strobe the ground to fuel injectors like yours? BTW - fuel pressure and spark are both good.

Yes the module controls the fuel injectors, so this could very will solve the problem.
