Default 91 instrument cluster replacement question?

Hi, I have a 1991 L98 coupe, am replacing the instrument cluster with one from a 1996. I am pretty sure it will work but I have read that the "center" section, with the speedometer, odo, and fuel gauge should be swapped out from the original cluster.

Is it absolutely necessary to do this for them (central gauges) to work, is it just a cosmetic issue, or what?

Thanks!!

Here's an old thread I found of a 92 instrument cluster swap into a 91. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c4-t...cs-inside.html.

that is helpful, but can anyone definitively answer the question of whether or not the central (speedo/odo/fuel) section of a 92-96 cluster CAN or HAS to be swapped out to work in a '91?

This is quoted from the link:

"just plug and play. No modifications were needed, except the LCD swap for Personal Preference".

The 92-96 LCD "Can" be used but does not "Have" to be used as quoted in the link: "the LT1's display the MPH on the top, and fuel level on the bottom - this is the reverse of the '90 and '91 display".

guess I missed that the first time through, although I am almost positive that on my '91 the MPH is on the top and the fuel level on the bottom, same as the LT1 cluster -- maybe the '90 is opposite.

Thanks again!

My "91" has the fuel level on the top and the mph on the bottom.
