Default OOPS! I slipped

I was trying to replace the valve springs and I accidently slipped and hit the valve stem and it went into the valve seal. Is there a procedure to remove this so I an grab the valve and pull it back up? I really don't want to have to pull the head off if I can avoid it. Thanks guys.

HHmmm... bummer. I have one of those little things that grabs stuff (in a 2.5 ft 1/4in spring). It's a little claw. Might want to try something like that.

Also, if you have one of those magnetic things, you could try and see if it will grab it (can't remember if there is any iron in them to make it magnetic)

You dropped the valve down into the head??? You didn't have the cylinder you were working on at TDC???

Try a bright light and welding rod (or coat hanger wire) through the spark plug hole...Try to poke it back up...

If it fell all the way inside, you're stuck pulling the head...

Good Luck...

It's a camshaft change, I've got everything taken apart, waiting for parts to come in and the first thing to get here were the valve springs. I didn't want to rotate the crank so I could put the harmonic ballancer on the right way.

Pull the seal off, use a magnetic pickup tip tool to pull it back up. When you put the seal on, just work the seal over the valve keeping it up. If you use new seals, it will sufficiently hold the valve up in place to put the spring back on.

Worked great for me.

That's what I'm trying to get at, how do you pull the seal off? Actually, how do I get the metal thing that the seal sits in off?

I have a spark plug boot puller tool from MAC Tools, works great for the seals, it reaches under the bottom edge of the seal and allows me to pull it straight up and off. Don't mess with the metal ring.

When you put the seal back on, press it in place with a deep well socket using the drive end.

I GOT IT!!! :D Well, I tired something through the spark plug hole, and I tried the magneticly picking up the valve and those didn't work. So I thought, I could just turn the crank and push it back up. It might bend the valve, but valves aren't that expensive and I'll take the $20 chance that I won't have to pull off the heads. And it worked. I turned the crank and it came right up! I was so happy I felt like doing cartwheels! :D
