We will reset the rockers after 100 or so miles, then after that every other oil change (10,000 max) is the proscribed interval to check the lash. After the first cycle you honestly should not have to reset many rockers though, just check them. (If your lash is deviating significantly I would check the poly-locks to make sure none were cracked).

No, he is talking about a chattering sound from the valve train. It results from valve lash -- a tiny gap between valve stems and rocker arms -- that you have to have when using solid lifters, which you've got to have if you use a so - called solid cam (a cam made for solid lifters). These cams can make more power, over a bigger band, than a hydraulic cam with equivalent idle characteristics. Other forum members would be better at explaining why. The main reasons they are avoided is because of the need to reset valve lash (see ChrisB's post above) and that they are harder on valve train parts.

Charles, any idea how loud the valvetrain noise is? Can you compare it to anything? Before having engine problems, I had a chirping noise coming from the #6 rocker arm that drove me nuts.
I'm concerned because the solid cam might be what I'm looking for, but personally, I don't want to put up with much chatter.

I've actually never driven a car with a solid cam, but I think I have heard the same sort of valve train chatter from other cars. I'm pretty confident that with your PE exhaust, open baffles, and another 100 rwhp, the chatter would not be bothersome (if the other sounds were not).

Regarding other people's perception of your car, your exhaust system already makes it sound radically different from stock. I would not be afraid of a little lope or chatter. Some tolerance of the former will buy you a lot of power

The chatter is not too bad, but you can definately tell it is there though. I run pretty thin valve covers and I think the chatter is louder on mine because of it. I am planning on getting some other covers so we will see how loud they are with some material between the noise and the outside world. It is just another noise to get used to. ;)

:D:D:D:D:D:D
You notice it mostly at idle or when backing off the gas when revving it. It tends to intimidate any rustang owner within a block radius. They have a fear of smallblocks making teeth clattering noises. :D :chevy

Great project !!! I'll be watching closely, my next set-up is very similar to yours.

How much did the Valvetrain set-up your wallet back ?

I got discounts on a lot of parts because I got them all from Speed Demon. The most expensive single set of parts was the springs.

Like John Mackey said once, it's not fair to quote the package price here. Chris K can give you a quick answer to your question.

Who makes this?
I've never seen one with built in studs for the centerbolt valve covers

Speed Demon has these custom made, along with matching sets of valve covers. They won't fit under stock LT4 valve covers. The girdlle in the picture above is on a solid roller 396 LT1 f-body.

These are the actual parts for my car:

The stud girdle and valve covers are from Melrose Tops.

I have been contemplating buying their system since -=Jeff=- showed it to me a month or so ago.

i don't know who makes them, but i doubt they're "custom" for speed demon. i've seen them around for at least 5 years.

i installed a set on an f-body a few years ago. they fit very poorly on that car. i had to do some major grinding on both cover and alternator. there was something else that really bothered me, too, but now i can't remember what...

That's my mistake, I thought they were. Looking back at my correspondence about them, Speed Demon never said that.
